Hi

[edit]

Hi,

Why I can't find the novel "The valorous years" ("Les années d'illusion" in Frech) in the list of works by AJ Cronning ???

Thank ???

The Wikipedia article on A. J. Cronin mistakenly includes "The Valorous Years" and "Vigil in the Night" among the short stories; they are actually novels (or novellas). Each was originally serialized in Good Housekeeping magazine (1940 and 1939, respectively), but each was published in book form in September 2009 (A. J. Cornell Publications). "The Valorous Years" is 168 pages and "Vigil in the Night" is 176 pages.

I think because that is a translation of "The Green Years". --Sir Myles na Gopaleen (the da) (talk) 09:00, 20 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It's actually a different book Metalpetal (talk) 01:35, 11 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Are there any movie adaptions of Cronin's novels?

Yes, many of his novels and stories have been translated into wonderful films and television series - see A. J. Cronin at IMDb for further information - the best films are The Citadel, The Keys of the Kingdom, The Stars Look Down (all available through Amazon), and The Green Years (available through some classic film sites).

Reversion of unexplained changes

[edit]

I have reverted three changes made by anon user 88.104.72.183, made without any comment or justification:

  • The removal of a paragraph: "By contrast, according to one of Cronin's biographers, Alan Davies, the book's reception was mixed. A few of the more vociferous medical practitioners of the day took exception to one of its many messages; that a few well-heeled doctors in fashionable practices were ripping off their equally well-off patients. Some, more sensibly, pointed to the lack of balance between criticism and praise for hard working doctors. The majority accepted it for what is was - a perceptive, topical novel. The press, typically, attempted to incite passions within the profession in an attempt to sell copy, while Victor Gollancz, Cronin's publisher, followed suit in an attempt to promote the book; all conveniently (or purposely) overlooking the fact that it was a work of fiction, not a scientific piece of research, and not autobiographical"
  • The addition of some unsourced commentary "(neither of his sons were able to confirm this)"
  • The removal of a book on Cronin. Davies, Alan. A. J. Cronin: The Man Who Created Dr Finlay. Alma Books, October 2010. ISBN 9781846881121

I assume that the paragraph removed is backed up by text in Alan Davies' book, which I have no reason not to believe a reliable source. I don't have a copy of the book so I cannot be sure enough to add an inline ref.

The addition of the commentary is in conflict with Wikipedia:Verifiability -- it is a policy of Wikipedia that material has to come from a published, verifiable source.

The third is completely unexplained, and without any explanation, completely unjustified. Jll (talk) 17:43, 3 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have just reverted, again, the removal of the paragraph and the book by user 88.104.72.183 without any explanation. I have once again asked the editor to discuss these changes here. If we don't discuss it, how can we reach a consensus? Jll (talk) 09:39, 18 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This autobiography has not been released yet. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Metalpetal (talkcontribs) 02:49, 18 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
