No Russian 5th Operational Squadron

[edit]

The 5th Operational Squadron was a Soviet formation, but it ceased to exist on 31 December 1992. The current formation that came into existence on 21 September 2013, has never, officially or unofficially, been called the "5th Operational Squadron". It is the "постоянного оперативного соединения ВМФ России в Средиземном море" or "permanent task force of the Navy of the Russian Federation in the Mediterranean Sea". The point of similarity between the two entities is that they are the detached naval forces in the Mediterranean of first the Soviet, and later the Russian, navies. Rather than create a new page for the current Russian deployment, information about it was tacked on to the page of the defunct Soviet one as if it was a continuation, and this has led to errors such as "5th Operational Squadron: Component Vessels", "In September 2013, the 5th Operational Squadron was formed", and "the 5th Operational Squadron was temporarily strengthened", and none of the sources anywhere in the post 1992 section make any reference to the current deployment as being the "5th Operational Squadron". The claim "Russia reactivated the 5th Squadron in 2013" is not in the cited source either, which has "Three years ago, the operational command of the permanent task force of the Russian Navy in the Mediterranean was formed." The optimum solution would be to move the 2013 material to a new article titled "Permanent task force of the Russian Navy in the Mediterranean Sea", or some such. I'll start work on this, but if others want to comment, please feel free. Spokoyni (talk) 03:43, 15 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
