Notable members of the 5th Indiana Cavalry
[edit]Another person who should be included in the notables is John Charles O'Neill. While he was reported for valiant fighting during the war he rose to national prominence after the war. He successfully lead approximately 800 Irish Fenian soldiers against the forces of the British army and Canadian soldiers at the Battle of Ridgeway, June 2, 1866. His leadership is credited for the victory and his treatment of captured soldiers afterwards was humane and gallant. The Fenians were forced to retreat back to America when they were prevented from receiving supplies and reinforcements by the American government. Afterwards he was elected to be the leader of the Fenians and served as their Inspector General. That is why he has ever since been known as General John O'Neill. 166.181.86.98 (talk) 15:14, 24 February 2022 (UTC)
