Dates need reconciling
[edit]The lead says the unit was activated in 1861 but the body and infobox indicate 1855 was the year. Stefen Towers among the rest! Gab • Gruntwerk 20:39, 25 June 2024 (UTC)
- The 5th Cavalry was the 2nd Cavalry prior to 1861. The US mounted service was all uniformly designated as "cavalry" at that time. Prior to that you had two regiments of dragoons, a regiment of mounted rifles, and two regiments of cavalry. Note the current 2nd Cavalry was originally the 2nd Dragoons and was renamed 2nd Cavalry in 1861. Intothatdarkness 01:14, 26 June 2024 (UTC)
- OK, but the current state of the article may confuse readers. How should this be resolved in the article for greater clarity? What should be changed to what for that purpose? Surely the lead should have 1855 mentioned if that's what the reader is going to see in the body and infobox. Stefen Towers among the rest! Gab • Gruntwerk 02:36, 26 June 2024 (UTC)
- In my opinion the lede should be changed to 1855. Possible language could be "1855 (as 2nd Cavalry)" or something similar. This takes into account the original unit designation. Intothatdarkness 12:02, 26 June 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for the suggestion. I have decided to let editors more familiar with the subject tackle this. I don't think my editing would lead to a good enough result. Stefen Towers among the rest! Gab • Gruntwerk 07:58, 30 June 2024 (UTC)
- I went ahead and changed it. Intothatdarkness 14:11, 30 June 2024 (UTC)
