TEXT BEGINS The 55 Group were a caucus within the Scottish National Party (SNP) formed in 1955. This caucus campaigned to win control of the SNP at its 1956 annual convention in Stirling but failed to win enough votes.. This group was formed mainly of younger SNP members frustrated at the lack of electoral progress of the party in this period. It was led by a Major James Glendinning and had loose connections with cells of the self styled SRA (Scottish Republican Army). There was also overt tones of anti-English sentiment amongst this grouping, epitomised by the publication of a leaflet The English: Are They Human?. This anti-English streak proved too much to bear for the SNP leadership and the 55 Group were expelled, with most of their members going onto form a new political party, the Nationalist Party of Scotland (NPS) (not to be confused with the earlier NPS). The new party contested several Glasgow and Edinburgh municipal seats in 1957. This split in the SNP proved to be minor and involved members, mainly located in the city of Edinburgh Glasgow and Greenock., and the new NPS made no impact what so ever in the long-run. a number of its members rejoined the SNP.
