Grammar question

[edit]

In terms of grammar, is it preferable to use "IIHF World Women's U18 Championship Division I was two international under-18 women's ice hockey tournaments" or "IIHF World Women's U18 Championship Division I were two international under-18 women's ice hockey tournaments"? The reason is, "two international under-18 women's ice hockey tournaments" are in the plural and not in the singular, while many Wikipedia articles that contain this use "was". (See 2023 IIHF World Women's U18 Championship Division I.) Should I change all instances of such to "were"? Because there are several such pages. Especially since in this page, "are" is used if not in the past tense. I was about to use "were" before seeing that previous years' articles use "was", after which I edited it again to "was".
