Wrong article name?

[edit]

Is this article named correctly? Volgoneft-212 and Volgoneft-239 seem not to have been in the Kerch Strait when they foundered, and the oil spill seems to be concentrated on the Black Sea coast of Krasnodar Krai, some miles away from the strait. Would 2024 Black Sea oil spill be a more accurate title?

For anyone who wants to write about an oil spill that really was centred in the Kerch Strait, please see the wreck of Volgoneft-139 in 2007. She broke in two and spilt thousands of tons of oil into an ecologically sensitive area, and the Ministry of Emergency Situations seems to have failed to make a complete job of clearing it up. There is enough Russian-language source material on the Izvestia and Novaya Gazeta websites to make a good start.

For background links, I have created the articles Volgoneft and Volgoneft-139. If an article for Volgoneft-123 is needed, the Volgoneft-139 article provides a template, plus links to the necessary sources.

@Motacilla I'd personally agree that the title should be changed, I originally created this article under its current name because that was really the only info that was coming out, that it occurred somewhere around/in the Kerch Strait. Newer sourcing seems to conclude that it occurred right as the waters open to the Black Sea.
As for your second note, there is some initial sourcing in this article as well for Volgoneft-139. Due to the scale of the incident at the time and the lasting effects, I'd say it definitely warrants an article of its own, if not an article based on the storm itself. From what I read, four other ships were affected in that storm, dunno if there would be enough info on them though. CommissarDoggoTalk? 23:37, 29 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, and again, thanks for making those articles. As you may have noticed I've nicked a couple of sources from them to use here, alongside some from the Russian, Belarusian and Ukrainian translations of this page. CommissarDoggoTalk? 23:39, 29 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
