2023-24 winners

[edit]

What will happen when Olympiakos or Fiorentina win the Conference League on wednesday? I heard that if Fiorentina wins, the Italian number nine enters, but isn't that strange? In that case: why doesn't Bilbao enters the CL if Madrid win?

And will Aris (Greece number 5) grabs Olympiakos QR2 spot of Olympiakos win?

How will the rebalance looks like? HarveyMilestone (talk) 18:32, 26 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, UEFA just like to make it complicated. The title holder berth for the Conference League is only vacated if the winner qualifies for the Champions League or Europa League via their domestic league (the same applies to the Champions League and Europa League title holders should they qualify for the Champions League via their domestic league). As neither Fiorentina nor Olympiacos can do that, they will take the title holder's berth in the Europa League and any domestic qualification is passed down through their league. This is also why Athletic Club won't benefit if Real Madrid win the Champions League. Does that makes sense? Stevie fae Scotland (talk) 18:58, 26 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
So when Olympiacos wins it, Aris will enter? 217.100.10.242 (talk) 14:40, 28 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
the place is vacated. There would only be an extra place if Olympiacos finished outside the top 4, which would mean Greece would have had 5 teams in europe. Ryllyld (talk) 22:13, 29 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Group stage debutants - clarity.

[edit]

User with IP 81.107.185.168 seems intent on saying that TNS and Larne aren't the first teams to play in a UEFA Competition group stage. In line with previous seasons, these are added in accordance with the introduction of group stages in 1992/93 for the UCL, 2004/05 for the UEFA Cup/Europa League and 2021/22 For the conference league.

Please keep it this way, in line with previous seasons. Ryllyld (talk) 22:18, 29 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Ryllyld: How about using the wording "major UEFA competition group or league phase"? This should be clear enough, given the Intertoto Cup under UEFA's control was just part of qualifying for the UEFA Cup. S.A. Julio (talk) 02:53, 30 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Good idea.
on another note, can we ask the admins if we can block user Mclaughers from editing the page please? He has repeatedly ignored multiple warnings telling him that the Intertoto cup is not classed as a group stage. Ryllyld (talk) 09:25, 30 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Mclaughers and 81.107.185.168: Before making any more changes with regards to first group/league phase appearances, please discuss it on the talk page. The sentence is meant it is the first appearance for these clubs/associations in the competition proper of a major UEFA club competition. While yes, the UEFA Intertoto Cup had a group stage for three seasons, this was merely a qualifying competition for the UEFA Cup held at the beginning of the season. The Intertoto Cup is in no way comparable to the groups of the Champions/Europa/Conference League. S.A. Julio (talk) 14:04, 30 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You're correct that it is not comparable, but it is an inarguable fact that the UEFA Intertoto Cup had a group stage in the 1990s. That cannot be disputed. Mclaughers (talk) 17:22, 30 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think you get to decide that the Intertoto Cup wasn't classed as a group stage. There were groups that led to a knockout phase; that's what a group stage is. That cannot be argued with. I agree, however, that the addition of the word 'major' solves this dispute. Mclaughers (talk) 17:28, 30 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If you're doing that then you'll need to add "major" to previous season articles, as the likes of Iceland and the Faroes mentioned last season had already competed in the Intertoto Cup groups :)
Amusing that we now have an English-based Welsh-association side in the group stage, the opposite of Swansea being a Welsh-based English-association team. Boothy m (talk) 16:52, 1 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
