Renaming article to "2023 Punjab crackdown"
[edit]@Oriental Aristocrat @Ainty Painty – What do you both think of renaming this article to "2023 Punjab crackdown" so it is wider in-scope? That way we can cover the operation conducted by Indian authorities (arrests, human rights violations, etc) which led to the reactions by Sikhs (protests, statements, etc). The protests by Sikhs worldwide can be covered in detail as well in its own separate section. ThethPunjabi (talk) 15:24, 27 March 2023 (UTC)
- It is not a "Punjab crackdown". At best, it is a crack down on Waris Punjab De, more accurately the Amritpal Singh faction of Waris Punjab De. -- Kautilya3 (talk) 19:52, 27 March 2023 (UTC)
- @Kautilya3 Reliable sources (both domestic and foreign) term it as a crackdown in Punjab:
- 1) Punjab crackdown: 'Khalistan flag' pictures, firearms training videos found on arrested man's phone
- 2) Canadian MPs of all stripes condemn Punjab crackdown as some receive online threats and Canadian MPs of all stripes condemn Punjab crackdown as some receive online threats
- 3) Punjab Crackdown: Here Are All 122 Twitter Accounts Blocked Upon Govt Request
- 4) Journalist allegedly assaulted as Punjab tensions spill over into B.C. "Emotions are running high over the state-wide crackdown in the Punjab region of India." – "Politics behind the Indian government’s crackdown in Punjab" – "Concern growing over crackdown in Punjab"
- Therefore, a move to "2023 Punjab crackdown" represents the situation better instead of a single article whose title is specifically focused on protests, not the incident which caused it. The rename would position this article for the wider-context of the incident and the protests/reactions can have a dedicated section. ThethPunjabi (talk) 20:39, 27 March 2023 (UTC)
- Newspaper headlines are hardly a good guide. They are made to be short and catchy, often by copy-editors other than the authors. Unless it is regularly used in the narrative, you can't claim that it has become a WP:COMMONNAME. To extend the crackdown on a maverick organisation of a couple of hundred people to an enire state with 27 million people is absurd.[1] -- Kautilya3 (talk) 21:18, 27 March 2023 (UTC)
- @Kautilya3 Share your alternative name suggestion/proposal (if you have one). ThethPunjabi (talk) 21:24, 27 March 2023 (UTC)
- If "crackdown" is what you want to focus on, it should be "crackdown on Waris Punjab De". Meanwhile, here is another Badal.[2]. -- Kautilya3 (talk) 21:29, 27 March 2023 (UTC)
- I also think "2023 Sikh protests" is a perfectly fine topic since it is a worldwide phenomenon. -- Kautilya3 (talk) 21:31, 27 March 2023 (UTC)

- ThethPunjabi - The scope of this article is to cover the global protests that erupted as a result of Manhunt of Amritpal Singh or Amritpal Singh manhunt. You can go ahead and create that article if you have the luxury of time. Oriental Aristocrat (talk) 03:29, 28 March 2023 (UTC)
