World standings and season's world rankings
[edit]Wikipedia articles are meant for the average reader to gain more information on a particular subject. The section on World Standings is virtually incomprehensible, especially with no prose explaining how such standings are calculated. Bgsu98 (Talk) 21:10, 29 September 2023 (UTC)
- I concur. I also struggle with the endless statistics for red-linked (unknown) juniors. It may be time to consider splitting junior and senior season articles apart. Well done reworking the data tables. ----Dr.Margi ✉ 23:04, 29 September 2023 (UTC)
- The idea is that today's red-linked juniors may be tomorrow's blue-linked seniors. It's impossible to know who will go on to achieve notability and who will not. It is much easier to add the link now - it will be filled in automatically should an article be one day created - than to go back to old articles to add the link. What needs to happen is to go back to older articles, see who is still in the red (so to speak), and delete the red since they never achieved notability and likely never will. Highest element scores
[edit]I have removed this section from the article for several reasons:
- It's WP:FANCRUFT. This is not a figure skating fansite.
- It's incomprehensible to the average reader and full of unexplained technical jargon. The average reader is not going to understand "grade of execution" or "base value".
- Most importantly, it's unsourced.
For example, it purports that Adam Siao Him Fa has the highest-scored jump thus far this season: a Quad Lutz for which he received a 15.18. The provided source is simply a scoresheet that does show that he landed a Quad Lutz and received a 15.18. However, nowhere in the source does it say that this was the highest-scored jump of the season. Compare this with other tables in this article (for example, the Season's best scores, which provides a link to a source where all of those skaters are listed in order with those scores. This list of jumps, combos, etc. violates WP:No original research in that it involves a Synthesis of sources in order to draw a conclusion. It requires parsing every scoresheet for every skater in every competition. Bgsu98 (Talk) 13:15, 30 September 2023 (UTC)
- We can also carry the scoring minutia too far. I struggle with how meaningful these best score lists are as is given judging is highly subjective and bests tend to cluster in a given competition. Individual elect bests is too much. --Dr.Margi ✉ 15:23, 30 September 2023 (UTC)
Current world standings
[edit]Is there a reason why one section of this article (Season's best scores) includes only the top 20, but the Current world standings includes the top 30? This article is already overly bloated as it is. Bgsu98 (Talk) 14:55, 30 September 2023 (UTC)
- I have reduced the tables in the Season's best scores section to the top 10, as that seems to be the standard in other figure skating articles. See, for example, List of highest scores in figure skating. I have also properly formatted the tables so that they comply with MOS:ACCESS. Bgsu98 (Talk) 01:36, 9 November 2023 (UTC)
Formatting changes
[edit]Hey Bgsu98, could you help me understand the formatting changes you've made to the season's best scores section of this page, specifically your decision to create columns that delineate partners in paired discipline by gender? I'm struggling to understand the need for this considering separation of partner names with a slash in one column is standard. This formatting also creates a gender binary which does not allow for the inclusion of non-binary athletes, which is a necessary consideration. I'd appreciate hearing your perspective as I'm inclined to revert to standard formatting. Thanks! Clemkr (talk) 23:44, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
- Hello... this was in response to changes implemented in articles such as List of highest scores in figure skating, which I believe resulted from discussions at Wikipedia:WikiProject Figure Skating. It also allows for sorting by the male partner, which has before not been possible. Bgsu98 (Talk) 23:55, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
- Appreciate it. I'll go have a look at what was discussed. Clemkr (talk) 00:20, 15 November 2023 (UTC)
