Lead in Year article

[edit]

@Paul 012: I can not see why this article needs regnal year, Rattanakosin Era and Buddhist Era. So-called "proper lead" as in 2022 does not include any year other than Common Era. Comparing multiple calendars hardly makes the lead any more proper, just longer. Horus (talk) 17:46, 20 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Year in country articles are WP:stand-alone lists, and are bound by the relevant manual of style. Per WP:SALLEAD:

A stand-alone list should begin with a lead section that summarizes its content, provides any necessary background information, gives encyclopedic context, links to other relevant articles, and makes direct statements about the criteria by which members of the list were selected, unless inclusion criteria are unambiguously clear from the article title.

The fact that the vast majority of year articles have non-existent leads with only a placeholder opening is simply due because no one has bothered to write proper introductions for them yet. You changed the opening to "Events from the year 2022 in Thailand." This is incorrect on multiple fronts, as it is a non-sentence fragment, uses inappropriate bold text (MOS:AVOIDBOLD), and provides no context to the reader.
Often on Wikipedia, editors are quite ignorant of the manual of style and will just copy formatting from what they see in other existing articles. This often leads to proliferation of poorly formatted articles, but this in no way makes them the accepted standard. Incidentally, have you taken a look at any of the other Year in Thailand articles? All of them currently use the introductory format that you removed, so your removal in this article alone did the opposite of standardising it with similar articles.
Of course, discussion on which basic introductory facts should be included by default in the lead of Year in Thailand articles would be good to have. But that should probably take place at a more central venue such as WT:WikiProject Thailand or WT:WikiProject Years. --Paul_012 (talk) 23:51, 20 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
