Direct entries

[edit]

Dear tennis wiki contributors,

I d like to understand how the direct entries worked this time to understand the mechanics.
I see 45 spots for direct entry (56 players, 4 WC, 7 qualifiers entries) and first no Direct entry is ranked 45 last week (april 25 atp ranking)

3 early withdrawal : Beretini, Medvedev, Federer (not even mentionned on wiki), wawrinka (not in top 100!!? why is it mentionned here ?, confusion with Fed i would bet)
2 protected ranking : Coric & Thiem

In my book it gives a direct entry to player ranked up to 46. I dont find any recent ranking week where the last Direct entries are Fokina/martinez/van-de-Zandschulp mentioned here as replacement. April 04 ranking almost fits with federer being 44 and the 3 above being 43 45 and 46. In my book, that week, Humbert (47) should have made it to the main draw as Zandshulp being 43, had a direct entry.

Still in madrid player list ("https://www.madrid-open.com/jugadores-mmo/") Fognini (which was a direct entry) is ranked above 60... while he was 32 on april 4.

I would appreciate any explanations Alfonsedode (talk) 13:09, 2 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure I fully understand the question but I can say for a fact that Federer never entered the tournament, which is why he isn't mentioned on the page. Wawrinka is mentioned because he did originally enter the tournament through a protected ranking, but then later withdrew. 45 spots minus the two spots taken by Coric and Thiem but then adding three spots because of Berrettini and Medvedev withdrawing and Federer not entering makes the cut-off 46, which means Humbert at 47 is the first alternate. The rankings of April 4 were used like you said. Adamtt9 (talk) 15:54, 2 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
OK, thanks, seems i failed to count properly, maybe cause i found the april 4 ranking late in my research. Is it easy to find which ranking is used for the entry list ? Also, it seems seeds are decided the week before the tournament ?
thanks again Alfonsedode (talk) 16:00, 2 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Beat top 3 seeds en route to the title

[edit]

Is it a rare achievement (for Alcaraz), that worth to mention? At Madrid Open? At Masters? At any tournament? Ilyan (talk) 18:51, 8 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
