Participants: Belarus couldn't participate 2022 Top Division at all
[edit]Belarus team took last place at Group B of 2021 World Championship and was relegated to Group A of Division I. It could play at 2022 Championship Division I, but couldn't Top Division. Therefore, Belarus couldn't participate 2022 Top Division at all. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Netot (talk • contribs) 12:01, 7 March 2022 (UTC)
- Well no. With no Division I taking place in 2021 there was no promotion or relegation.18abruce (talk) 14:49, 14 May 2022 (UTC)
Czechia vs. Czech Republic
[edit]There seems to be a lot of edit warring going on over the use of the name Czechia as that is the official name the Czech team is using now. So, are we keeping it as Czechia or switching back to Czech Republic? Xolkan (talk) 9:53, 18 May 2022 (UTC)
- United Kingdom competes under Great Britain. Do you want to change it to United Kingdom and unify it wikipediawide on one name only for one state? Same with Taiwan - Chinese Taipei. It IS thinkable to use different names in different circumstances (eg. in sport) on Wikipedia. It means there's no such thing as "Superior is the internal consistency and rules of Wikipedia." without exception.
- IIHF uses Czechia exclusively. Several newspaper does comply, several does not with their policy "only one name for one state regardless what is actually used in such and such circumstances, in other words deny what you see on your own eyes to make a point". What to do, what to do... Is it bypassing of moratorium or not... Noone expected this could be done so quickly with theit "it won't catch on.... see you in 10 years and so on". Do you want to use first-hand name from the official source or chew it through second-hand newspaper and then filter it through Wikipedia's not-so-unifying-as-you-think policies? These Wikipedia articles are heavily first-hand sourced by IIHF...
- BTW template "ih" does expect such cases, that's why it has "name" parameter to overwrite default name of the state. And Czechia is probably good example when to do it (team name against country name).
- Do expect Czechia in sport more and more. Is is really "Czechia everywhere" against "Czech Republic everywhere"? Are those only options and results of moratorium? What about "Czechia where confirmed"? Chrz (talk) 11:11, 18 May 2022 (UTC)
- Sorry, I didn't notice there a discussion so I copy the arguments from the discussion with Chrz:
- I'm not against the name of Czechia as such, but against using it in this environment before it becomes a more common name than the Czech Republic and the Czech Republic page will be moved – then it will be changed everywhere at once. But here the internal transfer from the Czech Republic to Czechia within the IIHF is used as an argument that it is now appropriate to use the Czech Republic for encyclopedic purposes, and that's just not how it works, this is not a sports newspaper. Use this argument when the next discussion about the CR page move will take place, then the name will be changed on the 2022 IIHF World Championship page as well.
- This is not only about the consistency with the name of the country page, but also with previous IIHF championships and with Czech Republic men's national ice hockey team. It is not comparable to Great Britain or Chinese Taipei. FromCzech (talk) 12:34, 18 May 2022 (UTC)
- Comparable: It shows that Wikipedia IS able to comprehend two names, one for a country and one for a team, one is more common here, other is more common there, even though for the name of the main article only one of them can be used.
- Consistency: I am not sure it will be allowed to change it retroactivelly in 2021, 2020 etc. articles even if Czechia wins on Wikipedia.
- Sport newspaper: It does look like IIHF charts and results, no long texts, just 1:2 etc...
- All at once: Not a fan, very strict interpretation of the rule. Approach "try Czechia on IIHF championship 2022 acticles for start, where it IS used and confirmed, do not spead it elsewhere, be patient, keep it even if it momentarily breaks the consistency with other articles about sport etc. and evaluate it on next move request" did not work, apparently (you can look up I was not the one who introduced it in the article). Approach "kill Czechia immediatelly at all costs even if used profoundly in this area" came, like always...
- Well-documented exception would not not break the role nor policy. Is it the case of Czechia and IIHF 2022? It may be... Will revert war answer the question? Hardly. Should in Czech Republic men's national ice hockey team's infobox be stated, that "team name" is Czechia, like IIHF says, or Czech Republic, how Wikipedia wants to have it unified? Should team name in Czech Republic men's national ice hockey team match with team results in 2022 IIHF World Championship? Tough tough questions... Chrz (talk) 14:35, 18 May 2022 (UTC)
- I sure it's better to keep name of Czech Republic because it's been used at Wikipages about last 30 World Championships (not speaking about other tournaments) and there is no any significant reason to replace one official country name with another.Hyperion82 (talk) 15:49, 18 May 2022 (UTC)
- I am also infavour of using Czech Republic. But whatever the outcome will be, the reverts back and forth have to stop. Kante4 (talk) 16:29, 18 May 2022 (UTC)
- Is country name always the same thing as team name? No. Is Czechia really used in hockey context as current team name? Yes. Should Wikipedia overwrite such appearances of team name with common country name? There are several examples when Wikipedia does not synchronize country name with team name, because it would skew sources in such matter that Wikipedia rather allows different names in different contexts. How does last 30 championships relate to the fact that change was made, such principle would prevent any change ever! Only 2022 is in question now... Chrz (talk) 17:35, 18 May 2022 (UTC)
- This has been discussed twice already at Wikipedia:WikiProject Ice Hockey (for the World Juniors and the U18s) and the consensus both times was to use "Czechia." The IIHF has stated clearly that this is what they will use, the broadcast partners do as well. I believe the right thing to do is to follow the current usage but not to rush into any change for historical results. It is the preferred name that the country itself wants to be used, for whatever that is worth.18abruce (talk) 01:08, 19 May 2022 (UTC)
- For a precedent look at Serbia and Montenegro men's national ice hockey team, same country but changed what they were called when it was appropriate. Wikipedia uses both FR Yugoslavia and Serbia and Montenegro. Not exactly the same, but should show that it should not be a problem to follow what the IIHF uses when there is a change.18abruce (talk) 01:26, 19 May 2022 (UTC)
- The Great Britain men's national ice hockey team (also known as Team GB) is the national ice hockey team that represents the United Kingdom. TEAM - COUNTRY: different thing. Thanks for links, examples and precedent.Chrz (talk) 06:02, 19 May 2022 (UTC)
- It is rather absurd that we have gotten past the Russian national teams being titled a variety of ways, but modifying the Czech team title, to something they actually want, is a problem.18abruce (talk) 11:30, 19 May 2022 (UTC)
- Amen. Chrz (talk) 12:40, 19 May 2022 (UTC)
- If there is consensus to change it, i have no problem. Kante4 (talk) 14:34, 19 May 2022 (UTC)
- Once there is concensus to use the new team name, would it perhaps make sense to modify the ih* templates to use Czechia as the name without specifying it manually? I'm sure this could be achieved with some Conditional Expressions trickery... Jiri.bohac (talk) 15:10, 19 May 2022 (UTC)
- Let's be humble and patient. For now using Czechia for hockey articles 2022+ is more one could hope for a year ago (and it is still not sure someone won't revert it). But maybe consider renaming Czech Republic men's national ice hockey team...?! Chrz (talk) 17:16, 19 May 2022 (UTC)
- I agree with being patient on this one. More time and perhaps more discussion should come first before changing templates and article titles.18abruce (talk) 16:08, 21 May 2022 (UTC)

Infobox
[edit]Anyone know how to make Czechia appear in the infobox? GoodDay (talk) 23:20, 29 May 2022 (UTC)
- I got it, unless someone knows a better way.18abruce (talk) 00:15, 30 May 2022 (UTC)
