Al Ahly participation
[edit]Quit this editorial warfare! Morocco is the host, Wydad is both Moroccan and the current champion; Wydad can't have both of the host's and Africa's seat in this competition, and this sufficiently explains why the Champions League's runner-up Al-Ahly was given a seat. Fenn Viktor (talk) 11:24, 16 December 2022 (UTC)
- But that doesn't sufficiently explain why the continental champion should enter in the first round, unlike 2007 and 2008. 2001:8A0:619F:B300:801C:8916:33CE:CBE5 (talk) 11:50, 16 December 2022 (UTC)
You're correct, and for some reason I didn't pay enough attention to this aspect. Luckily 189.17.39.35 got things right and I believe that this edit war has come to an end. Fenn Viktor (talk) 12:20, 16 December 2022 (UTC)
AFC Cl winner
[edit]The AFC CL winner won't be known by then! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.41.12.175 (talk) 11:03, 18 December 2022 (UTC)
U.S. club names
[edit]@Island92: Can you elaborate on why U.S. club names are not piped? — AFC Vixen 🦊 19:15, 30 January 2023 (UTC)
- Because that is the practice used for US teams.--Island92 (talk) 19:16, 30 January 2023 (UTC)
- Is there a guideline or consensus discussion you can point me to that explicitly outlines this, though? — AFC Vixen 🦊 19:18, 30 January 2023 (UTC)
- I suppose in the Wiki Project Football talk section. Something established such a long time ago.Island92 (talk) 05:23, 31 January 2023 (UTC)
- I am having great difficulty finding anything to do with the use of "FC" in U.S. or North American sports teams in Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Football, despite throwing all sorts of key words into the archive search function. — AFC Vixen 🦊 09:15, 31 January 2023 (UTC)
- I'm unsure if there is a specific discussion, but this is the style used on articles involving U.S. teams, for example see the season pages of Major League Soccer and the CONCACAF Champions League. The names of American teams are not typically shortened the same way as is done in other English-speaking countries. S.A. Julio (talk) 18:23, 31 January 2023 (UTC)
- If there is no concrete guideline or consensus on the matter, I am more than willing to challenge this arbitrary practice that has seemingly no explanation other than "it just is". — AFC Vixen 🦊 18:30, 31 January 2023 (UTC)
- The point is that it reflects the common usage in English-language sources. S.A. Julio (talk) 18:41, 31 January 2023 (UTC)
- Major League Soccer have used "Seattle Sounders" on occasion without "FC",[1] [2] SB Nation's Sounder at Heart uses "Seattle Sounders" in nearly every single article without "FC", the Associated Press uses "Seattle Sounders",[3] [4] [5] 90min use "Seattle Sounders",[6] [7] [8] ESPN use "Seattle Sounders",[9] [10] [11] The Seattle Times frequently uses just "Sounders" without "FC",[12] [13] [14] KING-TV use "Seattle Sounders",[15] [16] [17] and even the English-language edition of Diario AS uses "Seattle Sounders".[18] [19] Every single one of the sources I cited here are from January 2023 also. — AFC Vixen 🦊 19:15, 31 January 2023 (UTC)
- @S.A. Julio: I am awaiting your thoughts. — AFC Vixen 🦊 11:05, 2 February 2023 (UTC)
- The full names are typically used in standalone tables and statistical lists, as mentioned here. Given this formatting is used fairly consistently across Wikipedia, a better venue for discussion might be Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Football/United States and Canada task force or WT:FOOTY. S.A. Julio (talk) 17:26, 3 February 2023 (UTC)
- I will take note. Thank you. — AFC Vixen 🦊 17:28, 3 February 2023 (UTC)

What happened to the fifth-place Play-off?
[edit]The other CWCs had a Play-off for the fifth place. What happened? 84.113.159.75 (talk) 10:38, 10 February 2023 (UTC)
- The regulation has been changed. The fifth place match is no longer played.--Island92 (talk) 16:30, 11 February 2023 (UTC)
