Matchup sites

The matchup sites for the First Round have been announced, but there is no easy way of reflecting this in the template, which assumes each of the First and Second Round matchups in a four team "pod" will be played at the same site, which is not the case here. There are different bracket templates used in other sports that accept more varied venues, such as the one in 2018 FIFA World Cup knockout stage. That would be the cleaner approach, even if more time consuming than the alternatives of using footnotes or symbols on each score box.

Is there a specific reason editors have invented the footnote version of sites, as supposed to embedding the sites in the actual bracket like the last 50 years? Jdavi333 (talk) 21:40, 17 March 2021 (UTC)

Jdavi333, If there is, no one told us why. If not, I'll just assume that they don't know the way things have been done here forever.

As stated above, because of the unique nature of this years tournament, in all but one case, the two games in a pod/subgroup are at different venues. Sometimes they are even concurrent. (Example: Normally the 2/15 and 7/10 games in the East would be consecutive games in the same session at the same venue on the same broadcaster, but this year one will be at 3pm at IUPUI on TBS, the other at 6:10 at Purdue on CBS.) The current template in use does not anticipate that happening.

Another user, in the spirit of WP:BOLD used footnotes to get both locations in. Taking those out was removing facts so I put them back. Putting in one of the locations to appear like other years was putting out incorrect information for 15 of 32 games. I've now tried cramming both in with seed numbers following parenthetically. However, another solution (or a third line) will be needed for the second round. Feel free to improve on this, but let's keep the info there in some form, and accurate.

Game Summaries

In the past these have only been used for the Elite 8 and on. To have them for all 67 games is ridiculous, unnecessary, and will make this the longest page on Wikipedia. Jdavi333 (talk) 15:44, 19 March 2021 (UTC)

Where is the WAC? (and 13 other conferences)

Apparently somebody decided that conferences with only one team that lost their first game do not deserve to be in the table. I don't see any rationale for this. It makes the table inconsistent (14 more wins than losses, etc.). I tried to add one conference, the Sun Belt conference, and it was promptly removed. I added a note to the table explaining this fact. No doubt somebody will think that note is an attempt to disrupt Wikipedia, but tables should be accurate and any apparent inaccuracies should be explained in notes. This is fundamental to data science. Of course, if the table were generated instead of typed by hand independent of other data on the page, this wouldn't be necessary. It would be nice if somebody would add all 14 conferences in a single edit (make sure to set R64 to "—" for 1-bid conferences that lost in play-in games). RoyLeban (talk) 04:09, 21 March 2021 (UTC)

"somebody" is the hive mind of WP over the past 12 years that this section has been in existence. I remember it being discussed at some point, although I never had strong feelings about it. The fact that it's been done some way before is not a reason to do it that way now. Decisions should be made based on the best way to do things. Consistency with some other article is not as important as internal consistency. Why is a 2-bid conference that lost all their games in the round of 64 included when a 1-bid conference that lost all their games in the round of 64 excluded? Why is the SWAC, a 1-bid conference eliminated in the round of 64 included when other 1-bid conferences similarly eliminated are not? Because they had a play-in game? It just makes no sense, although I can see an argument before the addition of play-in games. Now that the round of 64 is over and the table is stable, I have taken the time to add the other conferences and fix the notes. I also added a column for cancellations, something that hasn't been necessary in prior years. Without it, parts of the table appear to be incorrect. RoyLeban (talk) 06:57, 21 March 2021 (UTC)
