Confusing incorrect statement.
[edit]2nd paragraph. 3rd sentence.
"It also marked the 1st time in the history of college football since the associated press started in 1936 that a college football team had won an AP National Championship after losing their respective conference championship game in the same season."
1936 Northwestern 6, Minn 0. Minn finished AP #1.
Although not played at the end of the season, that game was for the conference and Minn lost. The statement does not hold.
If the statement applies to separate conference championship games, those began in 1990. Why the reference to 1936?
