2018 Melb "Stabbing Attack" vs "Attack"
[edit]Proposed name change: Considering that the incident included a car explosion, the page should be renamed to a more generic 2018 Melbourne attack. I.am.a.qwerty (talk) 07:46, 9 November 2018 (UTC)
- The car did not injure anyone, it was at most a diversion. Let's wait before we rush into page moves. WWGB (talk) 07:48, 9 November 2018 (UTC)
- eh lets just leave it --103.217.167.85 (talk) 08:00, 9 November 2018 (UTC)
- Support move Police now confirming the attacker planned an explosion using gas bottles in the car.[1] "Stabbing attack" is an inaccurate description of the circumstances. Perhaps 2018 Melbourne terrorist attack would be appropriate now police have also confirmed the attack was motivated by terror. Triptothecottage (talk) 23:51, 9 November 2018 (UTC)
- Support move as the intended scope.--Kintetsubuffalo (talk) 12:45, 10 November 2018 (UTC)

- No, that's hyperbolic. Onetwothreeip (talk) 22:52, 10 November 2018 (UTC)
- With respect, how is it at all hyperbolic? The event in question occurred in 2018, in Melbourne, was certainly an "attack", and has been confirmed by authorities in multiple RS as motivated by terrorism. On the contrary, the present title is inaccurate, because it suggests the only component of the attack was a stabbing, which is misleading. Triptothecottage (talk) 23:24, 10 November 2018 (UTC)
- Yes, the only component of the attack was a stabbing. Nobody was injured from the car or the fire. "Terrorism" is not a motivator, it is the act itself. Other people have been attacked in Melbourne in 2018, it's very broad. Onetwothreeip (talk) 02:46, 11 November 2018 (UTC)
- It's hard to find, to be honest. January 2017, December 2017 and November 2018 attacks all in Melbourne CBD, all involving cars, with this one involving a knife as well. The three are clearly related to each other, if nothing else than by location and method (car). Calling it a stabbing attack is misleading, as the car bomb that started it all is the only reason why it was as bad as it all was. While he didn't use the car to mow people down, it was still a major part of it. It was also almost exactly the same as the 2017 London Bridge attack, only with less culprits and hence less victims. We need to work out better ways to categorise these things. Right now they are hard to find. 58.179.159.63 (talk) 01:26, 11 November 2018 (UTC)

Delete?
[edit]I think somebody has to raise this. Do we really need these articles? We could just have an article about multiple events, if we really want to document this. Onetwothreeip (talk) 06:54, 10 November 2018 (UTC)
- Agreed, we do not need to mention every stabbing attack as notable (their are hordes in London), itd be better in a :"List of..." page IF needed.Lihaas (talk) 01:54, 14 November 2018 (UTC)
- I don't think this is justifiable in this case due to the huge national media coverage, much of it due to the notability of the victim. The Drover's Wife (talk) 05:22, 14 November 2018 (UTC)
- Would the victim be notable enough for an article then? Onetwothreeip (talk) 09:02, 14 November 2018 (UTC)
- Comments here are pointless. There are prescribed options to consider deletion (speedy, prod and AfD. WWGB (talk) 10:08, 14 November 2018 (UTC)
- I made this section to gauge whether or not I should start an AfD. It has convinced me to do so. Onetwothreeip (talk) 10:10, 14 November 2018 (UTC)
- Considering it is still a major news item more than a week later, as are numerous issues stemming from it (such as Trolley Man being caught robbing people), I think that we can safely say that this is very notable. 58.179.159.63 (talk) 12:06, 18 November 2018 (UTC)
