translator notes
[edit]The Brazilian justice system is not a common law system and shares features with the French system, although the two are far from identical. Importantly however they share the concept of an investigating judge. This sometimes is translated as prosecutor, but in the Brazilian system the public minister is a closer equivalent. Special arrangements for what are called crimes of responsibility, a term for which I have not found a translation I like, but which covers crimes that are possible because of the position of the accused. The allegation that Dilma Rousseff altered government accounts to make the economy look better than it was is an example. These are tried by the Supreme Court if the Chamber of Deputies accepts a petion for impeachment and the Senate votes to impeach. I believe. This is not well-documented in Wikipedia articles. (Reason for the note) Only the Supreme Court can try a sitting president, and certain other government figures also can only be charged in this manner. Other courts deal with auditing government programs.
Sources that use pt=>en machine translation frequently refer to "award-winning" statements. This refers to the power of prosecutors to reduce sentences in view of cooperation given by witnesses. Another frequent translation strangeness is "mandate", which seems to specifically mean term in office or eligibility to hold that office. Stories crop up where politicians are removed from office and sometimes are barred for a time from seeking office again.Elinruby (talk) 11:42, 14 February 2018 (UTC)
