Squad Formation

[edit]

I've had a go at this as used on other club season articles. It's a bit fiddly to maintain as you have to move the flags and names around manually to line them up. I've only used league starts as an indicator but maybe it should include the cups as well? It'd need a table to go with it showing whatever stats we use. Yes - I was a bit bored this morning. Bladeboy1889 (talk) 13:49, 8 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I was almost near completing one of them recently, but then I got an urgent phone call regarding a job interview so I had to abandon it. It is a great idea as it shows the main starting 11 of the season. I say use all appearances, not just league appearances. Then have a table of the 11 most used players. IJA (talk) 14:11, 8 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I'll rework to include cup games as well - think the only change would be Monty in for McDonald - either way the midfield looks very depressing when you see it set out like that! Bladeboy1889 (talk) 14:57, 8 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Surely Ched will be on there too? IJA (talk) 15:00, 8 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Most of his apps are actually sub. He should overtake Porter soon though. LJF should oust Williams before Christmas too. If we get this on the page I'd suggest not trying to edit it too often as lining up all the names and flags can be a pain if it changes a lot. Maybe once a month / six weeks unless you're feeling particularly bored. Bladeboy1889 (talk) 15:05, 8 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Additional Sections

[edit]

Had thoughts on other potential sections:

  • Firsts - we seem to have been having a lot of 'first time' stuff this season so it might make sense to group it together. It could include various sub sections eg - first competitive fixture against club, first game at stadium, player first team début, player début goal etc? They should probably all be tables with the details / date / match etc similar in style to the transfer ones maybe. Not sure if that would mean having a 'lasts' as well by implication - that would be considerably more difficult to work on as it would all be retrospective.
  • Suspensions - not that we've had many but could be listed in a table as well?

Anything else? Bladeboy1889 (talk) 13:58, 8 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah we can have a section for important dates such as the first time Shef Utd played against club X at stadium X etc. Then include other important things such as Maguires first ever goal, the death of Speedo, return of Beattie etc, Ertl coming back from injury. Maybe have some sort of a timetable for key events? Regarding suspensions, we can expand the Disciplinary Record table to show suspensions maybe? IJA (talk) 14:15, 8 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Suspensions done. Not sure about an event list - that's frowned upon by WP:Football - notable stuff like Beattie and Speed should go in the prose section really. I was thinking more that things like first team débuts are notable as it could be years after they were signed or someone from the youth team and there's nowhere else to put it. That led me onto the other firsts like new teams etc. I'll have a go at something and see what it looks like. Bladeboy1889 (talk) 14:53, 8 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yeh do it mate, seems good. IJA (talk) 14:57, 8 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Also I was thinking we can make note of when players are on international duty, both full national caps and Under-X caps too IJA (talk) 15:01, 8 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Excellent idea - I had thought of that one too but then forgotten about it again when I posted this :o) Bladeboy1889 (talk) 15:02, 8 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hat-tricks as well... although that could be a very short section! Bladeboy1889 (talk) 12:20, 9 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Transfers

[edit]

Wondering if Beattie should really be listed in summer despite his time of arrival as Jan 1st is the actual opening of the transfer window so should really be the cut off point? Also we need some confirmation that Lockberg has transferred out permanently as that was what was supposed to be happening after his loan - but as usual no info coming out of the club. Bladeboy1889 (talk) 14:03, 8 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Oh - and anything on France's retirement would be good too! Bladeboy1889 (talk) 14:05, 8 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Add him in Winter transfer as he came in November and it looked like bloody winter out of my window in November :) Either that or you can have an other section, but for the sake of one player there is little point. IJA (talk) 14:09, 8 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

First team débuts

[edit]

Made a start on this table. Currently when more than one player débuts in the same game I've got them sorted alphabetically - but it could go on squad numbers instead. Thoughts? This would form part of a new 'Firsts' section.Bladeboy1889 (talk) 12:18, 14 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Squad # Position Player Date Opponents Ground Notes
11 MF Scotland Ryan Flynn 6 August 2011 Oldham Athletic Boundary Park
2 DF Haiti Lecsinel Jean-François 6 August 2011 Oldham Athletic Boundary Park
21 FW England Chris Porter 6 August 2011 Oldham Athletic Boundary Park
7 MF England Nathaniel Mendez-Laing 9 August 2011 Hartlepool Victoria Park Loan Player
27 MF Scotland Kevin McDonald 13 August 2011 Brentford Bramall Lane
30 DF England Marcus Williams 13 September 2011 Huddersfield Town Bramall Lane Loan Player
32 MF England Matt Phillips 16 October 2011 Sheffield Wednesday Bramall Lane Loan Player
26 FW Republic of Ireland Billy Clarke 19 October 2011 Preston North End Deepdale Loan Player
I like it, seems fine to me. I think it should be done via Chronology. We should include Philliskirk and Parrino because they were only on loan last year and this season has been there first team début as a full player. IJA (talk) 15:29, 14 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Also I've added to the section "Notes", 'Loan Player' where applicable. 15:39, 14 December 2011 (UTC)
No - I think it should just be début full stop - we've included loan players in this run down so it's counting their spell on loan as their début. Eg if we count loans separate and we do sign Williams at Christmas then he'd have two debuts listed and it'll start to get unwieldly. Also Beattie won't get a new 'debut' (assuming he ever plays.)Bladeboy1889 (talk) 15:52, 14 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Ok I see your point. I'm not too fussed tbf. But yeh I think you should add it to the article. IJA (talk) 15:54, 14 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
done. Good idea about adding in loan player into the notes - or maybe 'on loan'?Bladeboy1889 (talk) 15:58, 14 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Either "Loan Player" or "on loan", you choose mate. Your idea, your decision. IJA (talk) 16:44, 14 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Collins cards

[edit]

Some confusion over how many cards Collins has - the programme lists him as getting a card away at Wycombe but the official site doesn't and neither does soccerbase. Maybe it was rescinded? Or maybe no one noticed and he's go away with his ban? If he plays today then it'll need updating (downwards) again. Bladeboy1889 (talk) 12:14, 7 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

International call ups

[edit]

Good call - I've moved it into the squad stats bit as I think it fits in better there. Also added in what competition it was for (qualification, friendly etc) and did some merging of boxes to cut back on repetition. Bladeboy1889 (talk) 16:49, 14 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

New Contracts section

[edit]

Looks good so far - couple of suggestions: I don't think it fits under 'firsts', I reckon it would make more sense alongside the transfer section as it's to do with a similar subject. That said they're not transfers so it shouldn't be a subsection of that - probably a main section of it's own following transfers? Also maybe the intro could be expanded slightly (something like: the following players already contracted to the club signed new deals during the season to extend their expected tenure' - probably not quite right but we can work on that.)

There's a fix needed for the sorting of duration as it uses numbers - at the moment it thinks that six months comes after two years (as six comes after two) as it can't differentiate between the two differing measurements. By adding hidden sort fields we can get round this (eg 6 months sort as 0.5, 18 months sort as 1.5 and so on). I can update it later when I get back from the match or tomorrow if you're not sure what I mean.

Aside from that - you may already be on it but - Slew signed a new deal before he left and I seem to recall Quinn and Monty signing new deals not long ago but I can't recall whether that was last season or this - you might want to have a dig around if you don't know off hand.

Ched Evans

[edit]

He doesnt deserve to be in the current squad — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.43.105.170 (talk) 15:01, 24 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It's not about deserving - he's still currently registered so remains in the squad list until such a time as he is no longer contracted. Bladeboy1889 (talk) 15:48, 24 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

GA nomination?

[edit]

I think we should be looking to take this to GA. It's pretty much ship shape (hopefully) but I'll do a bit of a revision of a few bits of the season prose (which can sometimes get a bit repetitive when it's built up week by week. The one thing that might get pulled up is the 'first game at a stadium' section as it could get challenged as OR. There should be citable mentions in match previews for all those games that can be used as refs though. Also it'll be worth reffing soccerbase for the debut appearance, goals, etc for each player. Bladeboy1889 (talk) 09:59, 7 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Oh - and the academy bit needs expanding. I'm sue there was some overview in one of the programmes from the end of the season.Bladeboy1889 (talk) 10:01, 7 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I've done all this now so have put in the GA nomination. Bladeboy1889 (talk) 18:39, 11 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I've been through and fixed all the old sufc.co.uk links (which were all dead since they changed the website) so will renominate for GA now. Bladeboy1889 (talk) 09:14, 21 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Reviewer: QatarStarsLeague (talk · contribs) 04:40, 7 November 2012 (UTC) Phew, this is a lengthy one! I will do my best to surmount this one however, as I am passionate about soccer and I would like to do something ambitious, albeit audacious, for my second-ever review. QatarStarsLeague (talk) 04:40, 7 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The Review

[edit]

As with my other review we will be doing this in a serialized format, starting with the lead...

Lead

[edit]

As you will notice I had to make some minor edits to the lead, mostly for prose purposes. As far as everything else is concerned, the lead is fine. It appears as if every nugget of information corroborates with the body of the article, so we will move on.

Infobox

[edit]

The only edit I will ask you to make, although it will not be required, is that you provide references for the tripartite mentions of attendance, highest, lowest, and average.

Done. Bladeboy1889 (talk)

Team kit

[edit]

Just this one edit:
Due to the mention of the team's nickname or colloquial name in this section, I will ask that you provide mention of the nickname in the infobox as well, as some readers may be confused as to whether the "Blades" are Sheffield United or Sheffield Wednesday.

There's no field for nicknames in the season infobox - I've added it to the intro instead.Bladeboy1889 (talk)

Season Overview

[edit]

The rest of the review will commence after these initial issues have been rectified. QatarStarsLeague (talk) 16:11, 7 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Pre-Season

[edit]

This section looks good, cleaned up a few issues.

August-September

[edit]

I believe I have fixed one minor peccancy with the caption, other than that everything is great. Images check out fine.

October-November

[edit]

This section good, I don"t believe I needed to fix anything here. The reference to Gary Speed some say is irrelevant, but he was so influential, so it would be egregiously inconsiderate to pass without that reference.

December-January

[edit]

Had to fix a very minor couple of grammatical errors, but everything else good. Again, images are good.

Febuarary-March

[edit]

Everything is good after I placed some commas.

April-May

[edit]

Needed just one grammatical change here. Very good.

Another trip to Wembley (!)

[edit]

All I would like is a reference for the blistering heat comment. It is not required but would be preferred.

I was there and it was unbearably hot! :( - I've added another match report as a supporting reference which mentions the temperature. Bladeboy1889 (talk) 09:13, 18 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Reserves (!)

[edit]

"Sheffield United Reserves played in the Central League: Central Division at the Coach and Horses ground, which is also Sheffield F.C.'s home ground." Ref need here.
Other than that, all good here.

It was meant to be covered by the round up article ref but I forgot to add it in for that section, done that now and expanded it a bit as well for further clarity. Bladeboy1889 (talk) 09:02, 18 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Academy

[edit]

This section is good.

Squad

[edit]

I will leave off here, to restart the review tomorrow. Just one or two outstanding issues at this moment, so great job. QatarStarsLeague (talk) 04:40, 12 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Squad (roster itself)

[edit]

I believe that protocol for football squads go as such the squad listing itself doesn't need a reference. So this section will pass (phew).

Out on loan

[edit]

This section is good.

Players leaving before season end (!)

[edit]

I believe that the title of this section should be in past-tense, as opposed to present-tense. I will still pass the article even if this change isn't made, so it is entirely augmentable to your discretion.

Changed. Bladeboy1889 (talk) 08:51, 18 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Starting 11

[edit]

All good here.

Transfers

[edit]

This set includes the subsets of transfers in, out, and contract extensions. Everything is fine for this section.

League Table (!)

[edit]

Forgive me, but is this the season's last, finite table. If so, then everything is good. If not, then you will need to edit the table so it is reflexive of the latest league standings.

Added clarification note. Bladeboy1889 (talk) 08:54, 18 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Season firsts

[edit]

Very glad to see references for all of the individual information slots here. Nice work.

Squad staistics

[edit]

The one reference you provided does serve as an umbrella, encompassing every singular entry within the section. On those grounds, this section passes.

Matches

[edit]

I am ecstatic and enthralled to see reports for every single match played by the blades. Bravo. This section certainly passes.

Honors and awards

[edit]

This section is good, as references are provided for everything.

Post-review, concluding critique

[edit]

This really is a mammoth article, and it took an exhaustive amount of work to review it. Although I can say with entire disambiguity that this article is ready to pass, a couple of issues remain. Once they are addressed, I will pass the article. Very good work on this article, and congratulations. QatarStarsLeague (talk) 01:07, 13 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'll have a look at the remaining points over the weekend. Bladeboy1889 (talk) 09:31, 16 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good! QatarStarsLeague (talk) 20:49, 17 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
All done hopefully. Thanks for taking the time to review. Bladeboy1889 (talk) 09:14, 18 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
