University teams

[edit]

I'm wondering if the university teams should be linked to articles about the universities themselves. I'm a student at the University of Hull, and the rugby league team does not run through the university. Although the university can prevent the team using their name at any time, the team itself runs through the Athletics Union of the university's Students Union, which itself is independent of the university and is affiliated with the NUS (UK). I'm sure this is the case in other universities. The way it's currently linked suggests that the rugby league team is the University of Hull, rather than its Students Union's representative team specifically. Should the link therefore be directed to University of Hull RLFC instead, even if no such page exists? GW(talk) 23:28, 8 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You could make that page as a stub for now. Oxford University RFC exists so why not Hull? It could initially be as a redirect until someone pulls some info together if needed.
Teams are run through the AU but it's accepted that those teams are the teams of the university - they compete in BUCS and the union and the uni do not run a team each for a sport. LunarLander // talk // 12:34, 9 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed, they use the university's name so we can accept that the teams aren't totally independent from the universities. My broader point though was that the student rugby league team isn't the university itself, as the current links seem to imply. It's like directing to Leeds instead of Leeds Rhinos, even if colloquially we all refer to the team as simply "Leeds". I would start a stub but, let's be honest, it would fail notability. I think it's best to just leave a red link, in the hope that someday they'll do something spectacular enough to make an article pass notability guidelines. GW(talk) 18:25, 9 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
