There was no Australian open in 1986, please correct.

Proposed new structure

Almost all tournament articles to date employ day-by-day structure. Though this structure is informative while tournament is in progress, it suffers from several problems including WP:SUMMARY and WP:LENGTH once details on all the days are expanded and detailed. There is also unnecessary details on matches held every day in the tournament which, albeit significant in terms of all the matches held that day, are not significant in terms of perspective of whole tournament. In light of these issues I am proposing a new structure to be applied at the end of the tournament wherein the article presents a more systematic and concise view of the tournament and is drives away the monotonous approach seen in case of day-by day summaries. I believe that this new structure would also help in promoting article to GA/FA status.

A significant part of this structure relies on expansion of sub-articles as well. Information on list of seeds, individual seeds departure/defeat should be included only in these sub-articles and not the main article. The main article, to the maximum extent possible, should be free from statistics or other such details.

Na Li?

Serena Williams

It should be noted that Serena Williams did not "retain" her title, as the article says. She was not the defending women's singles champion. Last year's champion was Maria Sharapova. Serena was the champion in 2003, 2005, and 2007. This sentence should be edited to reflect this. Possible choices could be "regained" or "recaptured". Article needs to be rewritten to be more encyclopedic

There is way too much uncited and unencyclopedic commentary, e.g., "breezed" through his match. Tennis expert (talk) 11:50, 3 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
