Rivals.com

[edit]

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Rivals.com is nothing more than an opinion web site. While it might be run by experts, these so called experts have no certifiable credentials, and only have jobs because people pay for subscriptions. Also, similar web sites could conceivably have much different results. Thirdly, these players have not actually taken the field yet, so it's nothing more than an OPINION that Alabama's recruiting class is #1. It's no more encyclopedic than a sportswriter predicting a record of 8-4 or 9-3 in 2008. There's no reason to include either in this article.

Secondly, I don't see the recruiting rankings listed on the pages of the 2007, 2006, 2005 teams, etc. I have the impression that the only reason you include it here is that Bama was ranked #1, thus I have some inclination to think it might be a slight non-NPOV issue as well.CH52584 (talk) 02:33, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • In the way you are presenting this, you may have an argument. But is the AP Top 25 not the same thing? It's a poll—as the recruiting ranks—by sportswriters and I'm sure not all of them have 'certifiable credentials'. Latics (talk) 03:15, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, but the end result of the AP Top 25 has influence over other events, such as bowl placement. The rivals.com rankings have no possible effect on future events.CH52584 (talk) 03:31, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

DefCoach spot in template

[edit]

First off there is nothing that says only one name can be used in Template:NCAATeamFootballSeason and it is simply silly to try to say that. Alabama is pretty unique in the fact they use three coaches to call defensive plays. Nick Saban (head coach), Kevin Steele (Head Defensive Coach) and Kirby Smart (Defensive Coordinator). There is not ONE specific person to go in that spot, there are two. Kevin Steele and Kirby Smart. The template has read like this for just about the entire season and has been fine. I was simply correcting Kevin Steele's official title. There is no need to change it from its current state and there is no logic in changing it. Rtr10 (talk) 23:22, 30 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm split on the whole thing. The infobox does say defensive coordinator, which actually would be Kirby Smart... So I'm split on having either both on there, or just Smart.  LATICS  talk  23:31, 30 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah and technically the template page says the Defensive Coordinator goes in that spot, so if its just one in the spot is should be smart, but as my explanation above, Alabama doesn't really just have one defensive coordinator. It is really more of a co-coordinator situation, they just have different titles. I believe the way we have it formatted right now is about as good as we can get it. Rtr10 (talk) 23:38, 30 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Steele is the head defensive coach, which is generally called a coordinator. That's what the field is for. Infoboxes are for summary info only. If they were co-cordinates then listing both would be fine. However, I'm not going to bother arguing/discussing this anymore. Do what you want.. -Fnlayson (talk) 23:53, 30 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
There are very few teams, in fact I don't know of a single other college football program, that use the title Head Defensive Coach for Defensive Coordinator, especially when they have another coach with the title "Defensive Coordinator". Kevin Steele is not the Defensive Coordinator, he is the Head Defensive Coach. Does he game plan and call plays? Yes, but so does Kirby Smart, just as my original explanation states. There is really not a argument to it. That's just what the way it is at Alabama. No need to be rude or hostile. We just need to be correct in our information. Rtr10 (talk) 00:06, 1 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Alright. I'm sure all the assistants help with the game plans. Actually Coach Oliver did not have a coordinator title until like '94, but he served as the Def Coord. before that. -Fnlayson (talk) 00:27, 1 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Team stats

All of the season stats have been moved here as a reference per WP:NOTSTATSBOOK. Patriarca12 (talk) 01:28, 9 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

In their game against the Mississippi State Bulldogs, running back Mark Ingram set an Alabama record for rushing touchdowns by a freshman.[1] The previous record holder was Terry Grant, who set it in previous season.
