NRL vs JTWC

For some storms, the initiation of INVEST was attributed to NRL. To my knowledge, there isn't anybody on duty at NRL to initiate a disturbance. It's the TDO at JTWC that presses some buttons that create data that don't appear on JTWC's own website (other than hours later on ABPW10) but appear instantly on NRL and FNMOC TC sites. Can somebody look into this and fix those mentions as needed? HkCaGu 08:54, 19 August 2007 (UTC)

Storm Tracking

May someone put some storm tracks in the article. I am just questioning myself because last season, when the storm dissipates, a storm track would be shown. But now, only Typhoon Kong-rey has a storm track. A-yao 13:17, 29 August 2007 (UTC)

The ATCF folder on NRL containing non-Atlantic or East Pacific storm tracks was taken down. Chacor 14:28, 29 August 2007 (UTC)

couldn't they use this site.. WPAC storm archives? - グリフオーザー 21:30, 30 August 2007 (UTC)

Operational data is slightly different from ATCF tracks. Chacor 01:54, 31 August 2007 (UTC)

Strange?

In the 2007 Pacific Hurricane season and the 2007 Atlantic hurricane season, why do they have an alert template about one typhoon? Why this one doesn't? The Pacific typhoon season is the most active season then, we don't have that template. I know that some typhoons won't affect land but most do. Could we add the template? Well, I think Fitow is going to affect Japan, why can't we add the template? A-yao 08:20, 3 September 2007 (UTC)

Ive Added it now Thanks for pointing it out as this Storm does look like its heading towards japan both via Jma and JTWC models Jason Rees 23:14, 3 September 2007 (UTC)

Fitow

Ive started to work out the prose for Fitow in here [1] can someone have a look at it and extend it please thanks Jason Rees 01:47, 8 September 2007 (UTC) (forgot to sign earlier)

Also is Anyone working on a article for Fitow at all? Jason Rees 01:47, 8 September 2007 (UTC)

Please post your article for Fitow officially. --HERB 12:39, 11 October 2007 (UTC)
so you are aware Herb I Didnt make an Article for fitow yet Jason Rees 20:13, 11 October 2007 (UTC)
Actully thinking about it further i might publish it but it requires quite a bit of work Jason Rees 20:45, 11 October 2007 (UTC)
When an article for Fitow becomes official, maybe some wikipedians correct the article. Even if you think the article is incomplete, you had better post it officially. There is a Japanese page. --HERB 13:46, 12 October 2007 (UTC)
right ok i will then Jason Rees 17:14, 12 October 2007 (UTC)
Excuse me, but why is it so important that this article get published in the first place? The fact that there is a Japanese article means nothing. - SpLoT // 03:38, 13 October 2007 (UTC)
I'm suggesting that we merge it back to this article, seeing that it does not provide much more information. Please discuss here. - SpLoT // 03:54, 13 October 2007 (UTC)

Why delete the template?

Why do you have to delete the template about warnings on typhoons/hurricanes? A-yao 09:36, 8 September 2007 (UTC)

Usually, this template is used when a tropical cyclone threatens a landmass. It should not be a permanent fixture, added whenever any tropical cyclone is active. We cannot predict the tracks of tropical systems - and it is because of this that we should not be adding the template whenever a slight possibility of impact exists, but rather when the possibility of impact is quite certain. There have been grave objections to the use of this template itself (see here, here, here and here), implying that we should be cautious with its usage. Also, A-yao, point me to the tropical storm warnings for Danas that you mentioned on my talkpage. - SpLoT // 09:57, 8 September 2007 (UTC)
There are no official warnings for Japan at the present moment. - SpLoT // 10:03, 8 September 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for that. Maybe the next 1 or 2 days Danas might affect Japan thru its wind bands. A-yao 10:43, 8 September 2007 (UTC)

Danas

Is there someone to do a short storm history of Danas? This storm also has no picture. Why? A-yao 03:09, 12 September 2007 (UTC)

I will try to write a short storm history as i am doing with Fitow but please be patient as i hav a few other things to do at the minute Thanks Jason Rees 09:53, 12 September 2007 (UTC)
Thanks. Maybe the next 2-7 days? A-yao 11:28, 13 September 2007 (UTC)
Please, don't set deadlines. - SpLoT // 11:35, 13 September 2007 (UTC)
Im not going to say yes or no to your deadline Ayao but i will do my best to do it within 7 days.Jason Rees 11:44, 13 September 2007 (UTC)

Jump to CSI

An intra-article link has been added at the top of the article. Is this really necessary? - SpLoT // 09:13, 14 September 2007 (UTC)

No its not needed. ---CWY2190TC 11:49, 14 September 2007 (UTC)
i agree its not needed but the Hurricanne warning banner is Jason Rees 12:46, 14 September 2007 (UTC)

I see my Jump link has been destroyed, to be replaced by

ATTENTION: Information in this article may not be current or applicable to your area.
Residents of areas under threat from or affected by Typhoon Wipha (Goring)
are advised to seek information from the respective authorities.

Well, how is one supposed to know that it is "Typhoon Wipha (Goring)" that is about to wash out one's internet connection? All one knows is one would like to get to where on the page that is certianly talking about the disaster happening outside one's window, whithout having to think about if and what it's current English name is.

Allow the user to jump to the current weather, and then compare if it matches where they are etc.

Whatever... but imagine a weather website where not only the current weather was not on top, but there was no skip link.

OK, "this is an encylopedia, not a.... wikipedia Main Page... ah ha, where top news goes on top...

Anyway, "a skip to current weather link may save lives one day". You never know. OK, sorry. See ya. Jidanni 07:15, 18 September 2007 (UTC)

Your jump link has not been 'destroyed' nor 'replaced'. Note that the {{HurricaneWarning}} template was added much earlier than your link. They serve different functions, too. First and foremost, we are an encyclopedia. We are not a compilation of news, nor are we a weather website. It is not, and will never be, our responsibility to warn people or save lives. I see this link as a non-necessity. Any residents affected by any storm should already realize that Wikipedia is not the place to expect information which is always current or relevant to their area. (In fact, this is the purpose of the warning template.) Hence I still do not see the point in including such a link. Thoughts, others? - SpLoT // 11:36, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

Wipha cat5?

Hi. This source says Wipha reached cat 5. Is this true? Should it be included? Thanks. ~AH1(TCU) 22:54, 19 September 2007 (UTC)

The JTWC had it at 135kt/155mph which for some reason WU counts as a Cat 5 when it reality it isn't a Cat 5 until it gets to 140kt/160mph. ---CWY2190TC 22:58, 19 September 2007 (UTC)

Typhoon2000 noted Wipha a Category Five in the remark section for advisory 12 by the JTWC. - グリフオーザー 01:56, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

135kt is not a Cat 5. 140 kt is. ---CWY2190TC 02:04, 20 September 2007 (UTC)
Ya I know. I'm just showing another site storm notes. - グリフオーザー 03:52, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

After a typhoon is over with, the user can no longer click to see its track. Bad. Jidanni 00:04, 21 September 2007 (UTC)

Well i think another user is trying to add some tracks but their is a problem with NRL, if you want to see some tracks use the Jtwc annual advisorys or Gary Padgets monmthly summries Jason Rees 18:05, 21 September 2007 (UTC)

98W

98W was named Hanna by PAGASA. A-yao 10:22, 27 September 2007 (UTC)

PAGASA upgraded it to a tropical storm at 2 pm. --typhoonchaser 09:55, 28 September 2007 (UTC)
No need to post updates here, please. - SpLoT // 09:59, 28 September 2007 (UTC)
Yeah just post all info of the upgrades and progress of Tropical Storm Hanna to the article. -- グリフオーザー 14:51, 28 September 2007 (UTC)
Can some clarify why 98W was made into 90W although they are the same. 203.76.214.117 12:18, 29 September 2007 (UTC)
They are probably the same system, but only different vortices. I agree too it's unusual for two vortices in one system to be named separately, imo they should have continued with "98W" for the vortex that crossed Luzon...--typhoonchaser 12:40, 29 September 2007 (UTC)
As far as I know, PAGASA TS Hanna was 98W, but NRL/JTWC recognised later on that there were actually multiple low-level circulation centres (LLCCs), and thus introduced 90W. Now Hanna is 90W, which is also TCFA'd and is a JMA full TD at the present moment. By contrast, 98W is POOR by JTWC. 98W was TCFA'd earlier on, but this was eventually cancelled. 90W is over the South China Sea, west of the Philippines; 98W remains east of the Philippines in the Philippine Sea. - SpLoT // 14:38, 29 September 2007 (UTC)
So does this mean the JMA (or whoever is "in charge") doesn't count TS Hanna? --Howard the Duck 16:58, 29 September 2007 (UTC)
Hanna is a PAGASA-named storm, and only JMA is "in charge" in this basin as the RSMC, so yes, JMA doesn't count it, and hence Hanna is unofficial. While the system was east of the Philippines, the JMA didn't even issue full advisories for it as a tropical depression (which they are now doing). - SpLoT // 18:12, 29 September 2007 (UTC)
Since the Jma have now upgraded it we can count Hanna as a proper tropical storm - Also can some off you guys please help archive the advisories thanks Jason Rees 01:30, 30 September 2007 (UTC)
"Unofficial" storms should be listed and information (if available) given in the second section with 06W and 14W. CrazyC83 14:52, 30 September 2007 (UTC)
In this case, however, Hanna was eventually designated by the JMA as Lekima, and hence it is official. - SpLoT // 14:58, 1 October 2007 (UTC)

Typhoon Peipah dissipated...

Why is it labeled in the infobox of this page as Last Storm Dissipated - Season Currently Active? Typhoon Peipah dissipated on November 10 according to JMA, so it must be that "Last Storm Dissipated - November 10, 2007. User:Pika ten10 talk

Because the season is still active, when the season is over the date of the last active storm will be displayed. - グリフオーザー 02:11, 11 November 2007 (UTC)
Last storm of the entire season dissipated, not most recent storm dissipated. - SpLoT // 05:05, 18 November 2007 (UTC)

Typhoon Numbers...

I want to update the article to reflect the fact that Hagibis has now been named but im not sure how to do as JTWC has Designated it 23W and Mitag 24W Where as the JMA has done it the other way - So what do i do? - we had this problem in the Atlantic Earleir this year but it was easy to solve unlike this one Jason Rees (talk) 19:52, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

Ive decided to do it by JTWC Tropical Depression numbers as that is how it is done on 2005 Typhoon Season and on 2007 Atlantic Jason Rees (talk) 21:36, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

Okay, like we did last year with Saomai and Maria. What about the Japanese Wiki? it's currently ordered by the typhoon numbers with JTWC numbers out of order. Should this be changed as well? - VOFFA 2007-11-20, 20:39 UTC

I think that the Japanese Wiki Should have its own discusion on it as i can not Speek/Read any other language than English and Very Basic French. on your other point I think there was a Consensus made on the Atlantic page for the whole project but im not sure Jason Rees (talk) 23:20, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

PAGASA bulletins be included in Typhoon Mitag (Mina) and subsequent storms entering or forming in the PAR

I just wish to include information relevant to PAGASA's bulletins in this article from hereon as Typhoon Mitag (Mina) approaches the Bicol Region. This is because I think PAGASA's bulletin reports (if there will be any storm entering or forming and threatening or affecting within the Philippine Area of Responsiblity) will add more information about the storm. PAGASA warning time (if tropical storms are in PAR: Initially anytime if PAGASA detects a weather disturbance, then everyday at any of these: 5AM, 11AM, 5PM, 11PM (once every six to twelve hours). NOTE: The time is in the Philippine Standard Time.--Pika ten10 (talk) 13:31, 23 November 2007 (UTC)

Yes I think the PAGASA links are added once a typhoon enters the PAR. Also, can the image from this page be uploaded? It came from NASA but I'm not sure on copyright issues. --Howard the Duck 15:56, 23 November 2007 (UTC)
It is from NASA, however it is an image of Typhoon Mitag from 2002 [2] Good kitty (talk) 00:37, 25 November 2007 (UTC)
whilst i think it would be nice to add the PAGASAs bullitens, i do not think there is a way to Webcite them. Allthough i will look for a link to the advisorys as i think i found one earlier this week Jason Rees (talk) 17:16, 23 November 2007 (UTC)
they can be removed anyway once the typhoon goes away. --Howard the Duck 17:23, 23 November 2007 (UTC)
yeah i know that what im saying to you is that if we can find a link to their TC advisorys which can be Webcited then i will be happy to webcite them and have them all on the Talk page as we do with JMA & JTWC - Also That image i am looking for the one of the nasa page which i am certain is free to use Jason Rees (talk) 18:57, 23 November 2007 (UTC)
Now I just want to inform you that if anyone of you sees the PAGASA's subsequent bulletins about Typhoon Mitag (Mina), please cite the information the agency (PAGASA) had provided for the location, winds, gusts, movement and storm signals for the threatened or affected areas. And I do hope that PAGASA's tropical cyclone bulletins be regularly checked by anyone who will be editing this page (oh include me). Also, I would want this be utmostly done for subsequent tropical storms which will enter or form, and threaten or affect the Philippine Area of Responsibilty. For information on the time PAGASA issues bulletins on TCs, see my message at the very top of this section. Pika ten10 (talk) 06:28, 24 November 2007 (UTC)
Thats fine by me. When i tried to webcite them i could not do them as Pagasa have put a No Cache tag on their Advisorys. so i will try to find some other link to them.Jason Rees (talk) 18:13, 24 November 2007 (UTC)
To access former warnings from PAGASA, you click from the tcupdate page "Tropical Cyclone Archive" (you'll see a pop-up) and click the desired bulletin number (it is located below the warning page; you will see bulletin #1 on the archive after you have clicked the link to the archives page) you want to see. If you want more info or something is not clear to you, see my user page and see the link to the tcupdate archives page.-Pika ten10 (talk) 01:09, 25 November 2007 (UTC)

The archive for Mina's advisories is located here. I tried to find archived bulletins for all previous PAGASA-warned storms, but I couldn't find any. -- RattleMan (talk) 03:01, 25 November 2007 (UTC)
