Deletion
[edit]This article has been nominated for deletion for the reason of "I could not find significant coverage of the subject in reliable source". In my opinion, this deletion proposal is ridiculous and shows that the user in question (Odie5533) has no knowledge of tennis. I have many reasons why this article should not be deleted.
Firstly, this is a WTA Tier I tennis tournament, meaning it is one of the most prestiguous there are. According to WP:NTENNIS is a player were to have participated in this event, then they would be granted enough notability to have a Wikipedia page. And yet, the tournament itself would not be granted a Wikipedia page? Because of "not even significant coverage in reliable source"? I believe a little bit of common sense is needed here.
Secondly, as one of the higher order tennis competitions, deleting this one of yet not deleting any ones of similar value, or lower, creating a substantial amount of inconsistency. As a matter of fact, if this and all WTA tournaments of similar or lower value were to deleted, all we'd have left are the Grand Slams, meaning Wikipedia would have a massive chunk of tennis history taken out. And I'd be surprised if there is no one out there who uses Wikipedia as a source for tennis information.
Thirdly, addressing the complaint itself, I'd like to point out that this tennis tournament took place over twelve years ago, meaning that any "significant coverage in reliable source" is buried very, very deep down and long forgotten about. However, I'd have no doubt that in 1999, this tournament did receive quite a bit of coverage. Probably the same amount of coverage that the the Toray Pan Pacific Open got this year. However, just because the tournament is old doesn't mean it's any the less notable, it just means that it's a part of tennis history. I've spent quite a lot of time creating Wikipedia's tennis pages, simply because I see no reason why Wikipedia can't be an excellent source for tennis history. It's an encylopaedia, for heaven's sake.
So basically, I think I've outlined some fairly good reasons why deleting this article would be a big mistake. I am slightly annoyed that the article has been considered for deletion, but if it turns out that the notability policies are not in my favour, then I think there is a problem with the notability policies. The 1999 Toray Pan Pacific Open was a big tennis tourament, just like all the WTA tournaments past and present, and Wikipedia should have a place for them.
