About the Bank Failures Mentioned in the Third Paragraph

The bankrupties were not really a result of World's Fair debt. Rather, one bank failed, United American Bank run by Jake Butcher, and the failures were due to Butcher's own personal corruption. --ZekeMacNeil 08:40, 17 Dec 2004 (UTC)

"Failure" is a little strong, and inaccurate

The 1982 World's Fair--just in the nick of time before its closure (which was always scheduled to be October 31, 1982)-- got 11 million visitors, exactly the number projected when the initial go-ahead was given. The Fair was not a failure; neither did it make any money. It was a break-even affair.

(Actually, it made something like $50.00)

Some would argue that the Fair left Knoxville with an unmanageable tract of land and buildings that it has only 20 years later begun to deal with effectively (thus, an infrastructure "failure"); however, others could counter that the land is now worth a great deal more than it was when it was occupied by trainyards and tract housing, as it was before the Fair.-- — [Unsigned and undated comment.]

Forgotten?

"The fact that this Fair has been largely forgotten even by residents of East Tennessee..."

I'd say this is largely incorrect. I mean, who can forget it with the Sunsphere in your face?-- — [Unsigned and undated comment.]

Unencyclopedic

I add a {{noncompliant}} tag to the article. There is good information here, but also a lot of POV. Some I agree with, some I don't, but that's beside the point. Wikipedia is supposed to have no opinion of its own, so a phrase like this should not normally be used:

"This operation proved to be incredibly bureaucratic and inefficient--bordering on incompetent--and spawned numerous allegations of favoritism and corruption."

An exception to this would be if it were included as a quote from notable publication, organization or individual. In that case, Wikipedia would be quoting an opinion, not rendering its own. Even then, their are some pitfalls -- see NOTABLE for more on this.--A. B. 20:53, 12 July 2006 (UTC)

PS It was not a failure -- what other town can claim a wig factory anchoring its skyline?

I took a stab at fixing it. -- ke4roh 02:50, 19 September 2006 (UTC)

"Forget the World's Fair?"

I'm pretty sure that no one has forgotten the World's fair around here. In fact, during high school it was the "cool thing" if you had one of your parent's tee-shirts from the event. My dad worked at the resturant up in the Sunsphere, so I have a few :)-- — [Unsigned and undated comment.]

Profit

Did the fair really net exactly $57 worth of profit, or is this a mistake? I really hope it's the former, because that'd be pretty funny... ~ Triberocker (talk) 04:43, 16 March 2008 (UTC)

  • It's stated that the fair made a profit of $57, but "Knoxville was left with a $46 million debt." This seems strange, since showing a profit (no matter how small) doesn't usually cause a resulting debt. I expect there is something in the semantics of the accounting, e.g., "the fair" being a small, profitable entity unto itself, but somehow the financing by the city at large is accounted for differently and that was therefore in debt. But since the links from footnote [2] aren't valid, any explanation has been lost. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:602:8480:3343:70E9:AD03:FBAB:60AF (talk) 06:17, 5 January 2020 (UTC)

Boxed milk is a 40's invention!

The article states:

"The Knoxville World's Fair debuted several new inventions, including touch screen display screens, boxed milk, and the Cherry Coke flavor by Coca-Cola."

Boxed milk was invented already almost 40 years earlier in Sweden (Tetra Pak) and the brick shaped model - Tetra Brik - has ben standard in Sweden since the mid 60's. Exactly in what way is boxed milk an early 80's invention? (217.208.138.80 (talk) 14:16, 19 April 2014 (UTC))

Simpsons Episode

Hey, is there a reason the Simpsons episode that mentioned this isn't included in the article? Busy Moose (talk) 19:14, 3 October 2014 (UTC)

Next "international exposition"

Currently it says the next one after Knoxville was 1992 in Seville. Was I hallucinating when I attended World Expo 88 in Brisbane? Seemed to fit the category of "international exposition" from what I saw... Tigerman2005 (talk) 02:35, 11 March 2015 (UTC)

It certainly appears that way. Interestingly, the article for the Brisbane fair has the exact same thing for previous and next. Bms4880 (talk) 13:24, 11 March 2015 (UTC)
I went to the BIE website, and Brisbane is classed as a specialized rather than an international expo http://www.bie-paris.org/site/en/expos/about-expos/expo-categories/international-specialized-expos. And it doesn't appear as the next specialized exhbition as there's another in between Icarusgeek (talk) 13:46, 11 March 2015 (UTC)

Coca Cola Pin

In the section (that I have just changed to) "Collectables from the Fair", someone had a while back added "A special Coca-Cola pin was given to 500 dignitaries on opening day." So far, I have found nothing on the internet about this item specifically. I have found a bunch of other items, like a Coca Cola tray and branded cups. I have no reason to believe that this statement is wrong, I do feel that it is too specific. I think that it should be instead made more broad to cover any and all Coca Cola branded items that may have been released at the fair, but only if they were, at least, original to the fair and someone can find a source for them (which I can not find).
