As a member of the brigade from 1974 to 1977 during its assignment as an initial mechanized brigade force package of the XVIIIth Airborne Corps, I recall that the brigade performed a number of critical Army support missions. Two that I was personally involved with were 3rd Battalion, 7th Infantry's support with a 69 then 49 soldier detachment of the Squad Automatic Weapons Test and the 1st Battalion, 58th Infantry's support with Companies A and B of the Mechanized Infantry Combat Vehicle (MICV) Test. The MICV later became the Bradley Fighting Vehicle (IFV). This work greatly advanced the initiatives that fielded two important weapons systems that remain in service today. The MICV Test also deployed and used technologies such as MILES that were ultimately applied at the National Training Center at Ft Irwin, CA and revolutionized tactical heavy force training.
