Which flag of South Africa?
[edit]Since this series of matches took place in 1971, wouldn't the "apartheid-era" flag be more apropos than the flag that's currently there depicting the South African rugby team? We wouldn't be using a flag of present-day Germany in an article about international sporting events involving a team from, say, Easti Germany, after all. That is, wouldn't ← that flag; as opposed to ← this one be more appropriate? --Micahbrwn 00:36, 25 June 2007 (UTC)
My thought too : flag should be original Feroshki 00:19, 7 August 2007 (UTC)( a '71 demonstrator !)
This article doesn't really touch on the importance of the tour to Australian rugby and politics. Seven players, who had toured South Africa in 1969 and seen the reality of South Africa, chose to make themselves unavailable for selection. Australian rugby officialdom blacklisted six of those players for the remainder of their careers. The violence of the police reaction in Queensland was notorious, and this was responsible for a number of those arrested making politics their calling, including a future premier, Peter Beatty. The sheer scale of the demonstrations lead -- within a few years -- to all major political parties forbidding sporting contacts with South Africa. The reaction of the populous against the government added to the perceived weakness of Prime Minister Gorton, who was voted out of office within that year. Gdt (talk) 15:28, 21 March 2010 (UTC)
