Reviewer: TheAustinMan (talk · contribs) 16:21, 21 October 2012 (UTC) Hello! I will be reviewing this article. This is my first GAN Review - if there are any mistakes please tell me. TheAustinMan(Talk·Works) 16:21, 21 October 2012 (UTC)
- First off the article doesn't appear to violate any of the quick fail criteria, so I won't quick fail it. The article seems a little short, but since it was in the 30s of EPAC then that will be fine.
Comments on particular items
[edit]Lead/Lede
[edit]- Is there meant to be a map of a summary of the of the 1939 California tropical storm in the infobox? It would seem strange because the image caption reads "season summary map" yet the image is just an effect summary map. Should you put it elsewhere? TheAustinMan(Talk·Works) 16:21, 21 October 2012 (UTC)
- There is nothing I can do about the caption. YE Pacific Hurricane 16:47, 21 October 2012 (UTC)
Storms
[edit]- Make sure you provide   ; between usages of month and date, for example, month  ;date. (Be sure to connect the   and the semi-colon). TheAustinMan(Talk·Works) 16:21, 21 October 2012 (UTC)
- That's beyond the scope of a GA review. YE Pacific Hurricane 16:47, 21 October 2012 (UTC)
- Link barometric pressure to "lowest pressure" in the sentence "On June 12, a hurricane was detected. The lowest pressure reported by a ship was 29.10 inHg (98.5 kPa)." TheAustinMan(Talk·Works) 16:21, 21 October 2012 (UTC)
- For Hurricane One you provide an odd conversion of inches of Mercury to kilopascals, which is not used anywhere else in the article. Is this intentional? You should just use mbar to inHg and not inHg to kPa. TheAustinMan(Talk·Works) 16:21, 21 October 2012 (UTC)
- Link Manzillo and Acapulco in their first respective uses in Tropical Cyclone Four's section: "On July 29, a tropical cyclone was located midway between Manzanillo and Acapulco." TheAustinMan(Talk·Works) 16:21, 21 October 2012 (UTC)
- Hurricane Six's section only talks about remnants. Is there any more information you can identify? How do you know if it reached hurricane strength? Can you provide gale/gust/wind measurements by ships, like you did for other sections? TheAustinMan(Talk·Works) 16:21, 21 October 2012 (UTC)
- AFAIK No. 16:47, 21 October 2012 (UTC)
- "Blythe, got over a year worth of rain, and Imperial, got more than two years' worth." - This is a very strange sentence. Consider rewording, possibly into something like "Blythe received rainfall totals equivalent to a year's worth of rain, and Imperial received rainfall totals equivalent to over two years' worth." TheAustinMan(Talk·Works) 16:21, 21 October 2012 (UTC)
- Like mine better. Sorry. YE Pacific Hurricane 16:47, 21 October 2012 (UTC)
- "A ship sailing through the eye reported a pressure reading of 948 millibars (28.0 inHg), its barometer's lowest setting." - Why do you have 'lowest setting?' You should instead say, "A ship sailing through the eye reported a minimum pressure reading of 948 millibars (28.0 inHg)." TheAustinMan(Talk·Works) 16:21, 21 October 2012 (UTC)
- "The tropical cyclone made landfall somewhere on the Baja California peninsula. It dissipated inland over the northern part of that peninsula on September 12." - First off, link Baja California peninsula, and secondly, use 'the peninsula' and not 'that peninsula.' TheAustinMan(Talk·Works) 16:21, 21 October 2012 (UTC)
- Done. YE Pacific Hurricane 16:47, 21 October 2012 (UTC)
- "It also headed northwest and dissipated over the southern part of Baja California on September 15." - Correct me if I'm wrong, but instead of "southern part of Baja California" you should say "over the Baja California Sur." TheAustinMan(Talk·Works) 16:21, 21 October 2012 (UTC)
- Peninsula would be better here. YE Pacific Hurricane 16:47, 21 October 2012 (UTC)
- "The sea-level pressure dropped to 975 mbar (28.8 inHg) (measured) or lower." - Do you have to identify that it is measured? If yes, you should just say that "the sea-level pressure dropped to a measured 975 mbar (28.8 inHg), although it may have been lower." TheAustinMan(Talk·Works) 16:21, 21 October 2012 (UTC)
- "This tropical storm caught Southern Californians unprepared." - You don't really say 'this one' or 'that one' in tropical cyclone related articles. You should say 'the,' since, after all, its in a particular section specific to a storm. TheAustinMan(Talk·Works) 16:21, 21 October 2012 (UTC)
- "...damage amounting to $2 million dollars (1939 USD) in total, mostly to crops and coastal infrastructure." - Link USD to United States dollar, and since you already have a dollar sign AND 'USD', you can just say $2 million (1939 USD). TheAustinMan(Talk·Works) 16:21, 21 October 2012 (UTC)
- Good call. YE Pacific Hurricane 16:47, 21 October 2012 (UTC)
- "A steamer, the Nevadan, caught in the eye of this extremely powerful, very intense hurricane, recorded a (corrected) central pressure of 930 mbar (27 inHg). Even with modern tropical cyclone observation techniques available, this reading still qualifies this cyclone as one of the most intense on record; the next hurricane in the modern record known to have a lower measured minimum central pressure is Hurricane Ava." - A lot of things to correct. TheAustinMan(Talk·Works) 16:21, 21 October 2012 (UTC)
- First off, do you have to emphasize that much about how powerful it is? "... caught in the eye of this extremely powerful, very intense hurricane," - that's two positives. You should just say "was caught in the eye of the hurricane." TheAustinMan(Talk·Works) 16:21, 21 October 2012 (UTC)
- Removed one. YE Pacific Hurricane 16:47, 21 October 2012 (UTC)
- "recorded a (corrected) central pressure of 930 mbar (27 inHg)" - No need to put corrected in parentheses. TheAustinMan(Talk·Works) 16:21, 21 October 2012 (UTC)
- I disagree, pressures at that time were often exaggerated. YE Pacific Hurricane 16:47, 21 October 2012 (UTC)
- "Even with modern tropical cyclone observation techniques available, this reading still qualifies this cyclone as one of the most intense on record; the next hurricane in the modern record known to have a lower measured minimum central pressure is Hurricane Ava." - Just remove this part. First of all, its trivial. Second of all, its not even true. Ava had a minimum pressure of 915 mbar (4th). Hurricane Ten had a pressure of 930 mbar, which isn't really significant and is not in the top 10. TheAustinMan(Talk·Works) 16:21, 21 October 2012 (UTC)
- It's not trivial, it would IMO be trival to say it was the Xth most intense Pacific hurricane. As for your second comment, it does rank in the top 15 most intense Pacific hurricanes, and there have been just over 1000 EPAc hurricanes, so it ranks within the top 1-2%. It is also true that no storm that we know of was stronger till 1973, however, I removed that since we can not source that. YE Pacific Hurricane 16:47, 21 October 2012 (UTC)
Closing comments
[edit]Although this does not qualify for the quickfail criteria, you may want to consider taking this off GAN, working on it some more, and then bringing it back. There are a lot of errors that should be fixed. However, if you feel like it, then you can still stick around and fix the comments, and maybe I'll have some more when you're done correcting the issues. TheAustinMan(Talk·Works) 16:21, 21 October 2012 (UTC)
- You have not seen "a lot". Here is a lot Talk:Hurricane Jimena (2009)/GA1. As for the second part, it is a waste of time. Why an't it stay on GAN while I am working on it? YE Pacific Hurricane 16:47, 21 October 2012 (UTC)
