[edit]After reading your article, it appears that the mining inudstry really affected the lifestyle of the people in Maoweaqua. The overwhelming response to the whistle that blew, indicating that something had gone awry, is clear evidence of this. I understand that the mine has been shut done, and hence mining is no longer as large a factor in the lives of the people that live there. Has a new source of income for the town arose to replace the revenue that was generated by the mine, and if so has the new industry also influenced the lifestyle of the people in Moweaqua? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Katharine Reszetnik (talk • contribs) 18:09, 31 May 2011 (UTC)
Excellent question. According to the 2010 US Census (http://www.census.gov/geo/www/gazetteer/gazette.html), the population in Moweaqua is currently 1,831 people. Therefore, it would be difficult for a town of that size to develop a dominant industry. Moweaqua most likely takes on the industries of the surrounding towns in Illinois. --Carolyngreene (talk) 14:26, 1 June 2011 (UTC)
Very informative article! Why with the further growth of the mine in 1897 did Catholic families in the area feel the need to build a Catholic church? Thanks so much. Oliviafoster (talk) 18:20, 31 May 2011 (UTC)
Good question. The further growth of the mine in 1897 attracted many families to come to the town because of the prosperous industry. The town had no church, and many of these families happened to be Catholic and so they wanted a Catholic church in the town so they could practice their faith together. --Carolyngreene (talk) 14:26, 1 June 2011 (UTC)
