Champions
[edit]Virginia was the Southern champion of 1895, no argument there. North Carolina was second best in Dixie. According to the College Football Warehouse, they were SIAA champions. Though they were involved with the founding of the SIAA, see the sources on that article for why I don't think they were in it for this season (or many at all). The road trip seemed to give them one like Georgia Tech claims one in 1915 despite being independent. Then there's Vandy, which is reasonably ranked in third place, or at worse is tied for third with Auburn. Fuzzy Woodruff says Vandy was the best team in the Cotton States and third best in the South, which is another way to say they were SIAA champs. However, 1897 is Vandy's first traditional title, so it seems the idea of UNC claiming it has legs. Cake (talk) 18:48, 13 January 2017 (UTC)
