Death toll
[edit]According to this source the death toll of this earthquake was in the thousands, to quote "the 1733 Dongchuan M7.8 earthquake occurred on the northern XJF, resulting in thousands of casualties (Wang et al., 2017)". Wang et al. 2017 is in chinese, but a google translation explains where the numbers come from, even if the details of the translation probably aren't that reliable. In a section titled "Mine collapse and casualties", it refers to a 10,000 population at the Tangdan mine works with few casualties on the surface but seems to say that few of the many miners emerged safely and goes on to say "In an era with backward technology, heavy casualties are unavoidable".
