"in 1846 the regiment petitioned successfully to retain this colour"
[edit]"..on its return to England in 1846 the regiment petitioned successfully to retain this colour when all lancer regiments were ordered to return to blue."
This needs to be amended. The 16th had received permission to retain the scarlet coat before 1846, while still in India.
On receiving word that the light cavalry were to revert to blue coats, Sir John Vandeleur, Colonel of the 16th Lancers, made a personal appeal to the queen to retain scarlet and on 2nd March 1841 this was granted.
See: Rev. Percy Sumner in Journal of the Society for Army Historical Research, Vol 27, 1949, p.116.
This is reflected on pp. 12-13, Queen's Regulations 1844. Regiments of Cavalry, with the colours of their Uniforms and facings; (etc.)
