Necessity of article
[edit]This article is OK, but seems to be largely a repeat of information available elsewhere in Wikipedia, for example in The Amityville Horror.--Ianmacm 06:59, 10 July 2007 (UTC)
References in article
[edit]There are no references or inline citations in the article, since it is almost entirely a repeat of information that can be found in The Amityville Horror and Ronald DeFeo, Jr.. The article was created (arguably unnecessarily) a while back, and it acts largely as a pointer to the main articles involved. --♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 09:19, 23 March 2008 (UTC)
House is for sale?
[edit]It appears that the 108 Ocean Drive is for sale again? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.146.153.64 (talk) 15:56, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
- The house may be up for sale, but there needs to be a bit more detail to confirm this. Also, the article needs to avoid WP:RECENTISM, which is giving information that may go out of date quickly. There are also privacy issues due to the longstanding problem with tourists turning up at the house, which is not open to the public. The web page that has set off speculation that the house is up for sale is here. --♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 17:12, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
- Having looked at this more closely, the house may not be for sale. The Zillows real estate website may be giving a hypothetical estimate of the price the house would fetch if it were up for sale. At the left hand side of the page, there is a red arrow and the words "Tell us it's for sale". Clicking on the link brings up a box which allows the reader to report that the house is for sale. This seems to show that the house is not up for sale, and that the price quoted is for guidance purposes only. Also, if the house were for sale, there should be the address and phone number of the real estate office handling the sale, otherwise the web page would not make much sense. So, some caution is needed here. --♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 17:24, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
The house is not for sale. The website is only a estimate site.--VampireKen (talk) 19:51, 2 November 2008 (UTC)
Picture of cops at house on the night of the murders
[edit]I found a picture of crowds outside the house when the police were investigating the family massacre. Should I put it here or on the defeo page? I'll put it on one of them now.--VampireKen (talk) 20:03, 2 November 2008 (UTC)
- The main issue here is the copyright. If it is a press photo you may get away with tagging it as a non-free fair use image. It would be better for it to go on the Ronald DeFeo page, as the 112 Ocean Avenue page is largely a rehash from the related main articles. --♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 20:27, 2 November 2008 (UTC)
against merge
[edit]I recently reverted this article to its own page. This house stands alone in term of its historicity. I found various sources establishing the events that occur in the amityville horror as a hoax. The house featured TIME magazine. The actual events that happened at this house differ drastically from those of the novel. Multiple films and novels have been written about the house and has become a tourist attraction since. The novel is a fictionalized documentation of the house not the other way around. Valoem talk 18:36, 21 October 2009 (UTC)
- The house is only known for the hoax events detailed in the Amityville films and books. It is not notable independant of the hoax. Redirect restored. Simonm223 (talk) 18:40, 21 October 2009 (UTC)
- Actually the house is also notable for the Defoe murders therefore it would pass Wikipedia:WI1E. There have been seperate novels written about the defoe murders. The amityville horror would hardly be an appropriate redirect. Valoem talk 18:47, 21 October 2009 (UTC)
- Notwithstanding that WP:WI1E is an essay how do the defore murders constitute more than one event? Simonm223 (talk) 18:51, 21 October 2009 (UTC)
- Event one: Defoe murders
- Event two: the amityville horror the novel/films
- The result was a detailed investigation into the paranormal phenomenon. Valoem talk 18:55, 21 October 2009 (UTC)
Alternate description: A single event and a hoax derived from that single event. Simonm223 (talk) 19:42, 21 October 2009 (UTC)
- The merits of whether The Amityville Horror is true or not are not the issue here. There is a degree of content forking in this article, and all of the main points are covered in The Amityville Horror and Ronald DeFeo, Jr.. This article could be merged without any great disaster occurring.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 19:54, 21 October 2009 (UTC)
- This page is currently (and prior today had been for some time) a redirect to The Amityville Horror I would certainly not oppose the inclusion of relevant information previously on this page and properly referenced on other extant articles. Simonm223 (talk) 19:57, 21 October 2009 (UTC)
- I would also happily change redirect to Ronald_DeFeo,_Jr. if that would be more appropriate. Simonm223 (talk) 20:00, 21 October 2009 (UTC)
