Macrons on Ōtāhuhu

[edit]

I doubt that macrons on Otahuhu are necessary throughout the article. I suggest starting the article with the usual spelling "Otahuhu" then an open parenthesis "(" then the linguistic pronunciation, then the "Maori:" language tag link then the "Ōtāhuhu" then a close parenthesis ")". The article would then avoid misconceptions about how the name is spelled and pronounced in everyday use, and connect better to its derivation.68.40.122.133 (talk) 11:34, 17 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

How are there any misconceptions on its spelling? It is spelt Ōtāhuhu. If the "every day use" is spelled and pronounced differently, it's wrong. It doesn't matter if it's a common mistake, it's still a mistake.

Here in "en.wikipedia.org" - the English-language Wikipedia, we use the WP:COMMONNAME in English (though of course note the Maori-language spelling as well in the lead sentence). (If you drive around the suburb, I guarantee you'll see vastly more signs saying "Otahuhu"; that's the common spelling in English.) Ross Finlayson (talk) 02:53, 3 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
