Mythical saint

[edit]

The evidence that Æthelburh existed is very weak. She has been accepted by some historians, such as David Farmer in the Dictionary of Saints, but his sources are 17th and 19th century. Sarah Foot (Veiled Women, II, pp. 221-37) dates the foundation of Wilton as 10th century and dismisses the claim that it was founded earlier as a 14th century fabrication. Biographies of King Ecgberht, supposed to be her brother, do not mention her. As she is so minor and her existence is so dubious, I suggest changing this article to a redirect to Wilton Abbey#Foundation. Dudley Miles (talk) 13:54, 28 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
