Recent history
[edit]"... but Ávila has not had a major influence in Spanish society in recent history, apart from the nurturing of politicians such as Adolfo Suárez, the first democratically elected prime minister Spanish post-Franco, and José María Aznar, prime minister from 1996 to 2004, who represented Ávila in the Cortes but was not from the town..."
Not a major influence? Nothing but... — Preceding unsigned comment added by 200.12.130.226 (talk) 13:42, 18 December 2018 (UTC)

Requested move 18 January 2021
[edit]- The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
The result of the move request was: There is no consensus whether the city is the primary topic for "Ávila" compared to other entries on the disambiguation page, such as Province of Ávila. No consensus defaults to having the article remain in its current location. (non-admin closure) (t · c) buidhe 22:12, 17 February 2021 (UTC)
– This article is clearly the WP:PRIMARY topic based on a quick Google search. 122.61.73.44 (talk) 22:24, 18 January 2021 (UTC) —Relisting. —Nnadigoodluck███ 21:15, 11 February 2021 (UTC)
- Support. From the reading of the list of articles present in the Ávila dab page "Ávila, Spain" (and surrounding province and subsidiary coterminous constituencies), "Avila, Tampa" (no diacritic) and "Ávila (surname)" are seemingly the only articles for which seemingly that plain "Avila" (no diacritic) may be the go-to full name for which someone may reasonably approach the title (rather than a partial coincidence of a string), entering real WP:PRIMARY competition. Thus, more importantly, I understand "Ávila, Spain" (and surrounding province and subsidiary coterminous constituencies) and "Ávila (surname)" are conversedly the only ones on which we need to ponder WP:PRIMARY for Ávila (with diacritic). I see acceptable to reserve Ávila (with diacritic) for Ávila, Spain and to move Ávila to Ávila (disambiguation) on the basis of WP:PRIMARY, a tentative consultation of the number of visits and the common practices here for the titling of "Spanish provincial capitals" versus the titling of "Spanish provinces". Whether Avila (no diacritic) should redirect to Ávila (current situation) or to Ávila (disambiguation) is a different question, similar to the one posed here, but possibly a tad more nuanced.--Asqueladd (talk) 12:11, 19 January 2021 (UTC)
- Oppose, I see no WP:PRIMART based on long-term significance or pageviews, the province and last name have similar views and importance in my opinion.--Ortizesp (talk) 16:58, 19 January 2021 (UTC)
- Comment: I beg to differ with your assessment. The surname page, which we can simply consider another (pseudo)disambiguation page for practical purposes, has less than 10% the visits the city/municipality has, featuring a list of mostly non-accented surnames "Avila" as well as "Davila" variations, making any pretense of it being a PRIMARY target for "Ávila" (with diacritic) extremely flimsy. The province and provincial capitals of Spain are handled in a rather specific way (the province is also in "Spain", so arguing for the statu quo of the city/municipality as "Ávila, Spain" on the basis of usage bringing the likewise Spanish province as counteargument is absurd).--Asqueladd (talk) 17:34, 19 January 2021 (UTC)
- Oppose I do not see why this is necessary. Maybe a wish from the local tourist office? Wikipedia should not be biased and give a lower significance to provinces and a higher one to cities. The Banner talk 10:34, 21 January 2021 (UTC)
- Support. The historic and exceptionally well-known city is the clear primary topic over the province named after it (which is also, incidentally, Ávila, Spain, so this is a pretty poor attempt at disambiguation in the first place!), which is probably little-known outside Spain, and very definitely primary over the other Avilas on the list. -- Necrothesp (talk) 10:43, 25 January 2021 (UTC)
- Oppose – the natural disambiguator, and disambiguation page, are the most useful combination for names like this. Dicklyon (talk) 07:28, 26 January 2021 (UTC)
- Oppose Not the primary topic. LSGH (talk) (contributions) 10:56, 2 February 2021 (UTC)
- Support due to greater long-term significance to the city. However, ABSURDLY STRONG SUPPORT that this current title cannot stand under any circumstances, as it fails to distinguish the city from the province at all. The current title in unacceptable and absolutely 100% must be moved - I support Ávila (city) as a decent option. In fact, I have half a mind to move it there boldly and unilaterally as soon as this move closes, if it ends up with the city staying where it is. Red Slash 01:17, 4 February 2021 (UTC)
- This sounds like you are going to move this article even when the final decision is not to move. The Banner talk 11:36, 7 February 2021 (UTC)
- Comment: Ávila (city) might be somewhat problematic in terms of accuracy. The territory includes the city and several detached villages (Aldea del Rey Niño , Alamedilla del Berrocal , Bernuy-Salinero , Brieva , Vicolozano , Narrillos de San Leonardo and Urraca-Miguel .--Asqueladd (talk) 04:38, 4 February 2021 (UTC)
- Support yes - primary topic holds here Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 22:20, 11 February 2021 (UTC)
- Support. The city is the clear primary topic by pageviews [1], and by long-term significance. The province and electoral districts were created in the 19th century at the earliest, and organized around and named after the city, which has been around since antiquity and whose old town is recognized as a UNESCO world heritage site. The city meets both prongs of WP:PRIMARYTOPIC. Additional considerations here include the fact that the so-called natural disambiguation does not disambiguate the city from the province and that the existence of Spanish autonomous communities means that Spanish provinces are not top-level subnational entities like American states which is a strike against their claim to be the primary topic. ---- Patar knight - chat/contributions 00:38, 14 February 2021 (UTC)
- Oppose. Province of Ávila is as important. For an analogous discussion which resulted in no WP:PTOPIC, see Talk:New York/Archive 1#Requested move 7 July 2017.
- PTOPICs invariably collect bad bluelinks which are very difficult to find and fix. Such links degrade the encyclopedia, for the advantage of saving some readers a single click. There is a whole WikiProject, WP:BPAT, dedicated to repairing them; and we haven't scratched the surface. The last thing we want is yet another link to monitor. The result of the move request was: moved per request. Favonian (talk) 15:42, 22 September 2022 (UTC)
– The city is the WP:PRIMARYTOPIC per pageviews ([2]). Per wikinav, the vast majority of readers (over 80%) that land in the disambiguation page click on the city link ([3]). In regards to the province, the views are much lower. But the province is almost always referred to as "Province of Ávila" or sometimes "Ávila Province", but very rarely just "Ávila". It is a case of partial title match (WP:PTM). The proposed move is also WP:CONSISTENT with other provinces of Spain where the capital city is the primary topic over the province. - Support per nom.--Ortizesp (talk) 14:55, 15 September 2022 (UTC)
- Strong support as per nom. Elme12 (talk) 15:02, 15 September 2022 (UTC)
- Support as per nom. The provinces of multi-province autonomous communities of Spain (except the three Basque ones) are overwhelmingly referred to as
province of Foo
orFoo province
. That is reflected on the naming practices of Wikipedia articles pertaining Spanish "province"-"provincial capital" pairs not requiring disambiguation from a "not from Spain" article, except, seemingly, this one. It goes without saying that the current disambiguator is not compelling if intended to disambiguate with the province.--Asqueladd (talk) 15:04, 15 September 2022 (UTC) - Support, but I'm going to say a couple things. First off, province vs city is usually not a PTM--both of them have the same exact name. Second, Ávila, Spain is a terrible terrible terrible title anyway because the province is also a part of Spain. Third, "yemas" are terrible'. That said, the nom makes pretty good points, so I support. Red Slash 20:22, 19 September 2022 (UTC)
- Support per my previous comment: The historic and exceptionally well-known city is the clear primary topic over the province named after it (which is also, incidentally, Ávila, Spain, so this is a pretty poor attempt at disambiguation in the first place!), which is probably little-known outside Spain, and very definitely primary over the other Avilas on the list. -- Necrothesp (talk) 13:53, 21 September 2022 (UTC)
