Biography

[edit]

Stuart Slater was born in Liverpool. His father was a carpet salesman.[2] He was head boy of the Liverpool Cathedral choir, and attended Liverpool Institute Grammar (now called Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts).[3]

In September 1962, Stuart joined The Mojos as lead singer.[4] When in the Mojos, he went under the name Stu James. Slater co–wrote with the rest of the band their only top ten, "Everything's Alright", which went to #9 in the UK in 1964.[5][6]

After The Mojos disbanded in 1968, Slater returned to education and worked for a Bachelor of Arts and studied law at London University.[2][3] He worked for CBS as a promoter, then as a general manager for Bradley's Records.[3] He was also in A&R and publishing for ATV Music, and was alter employed with Chrysalis Records, working with artists such as Spandau Ballet, Living In A Box, Haysi Fantayzee, Go West, and The Proclaimers.[3][2] Stuart is known for employing Simon Fuller to Chrysalis.[3]

Slater began working with Stephanie De Sykes as songwriting partners, and penned three songs for A Song for Europe entries, one of which was "Love Enough for Two" for Prima Donna.[3] Slater and De Dykes later became a couple and were married.

Slater and De Sykes had three children: Tracy Stent,[3] an artist manager, Toby Slater,[7][8] guitarist/vocalist for Catch who died in 2021, and Barnaby Slater,[9] a writer and comedian. Stuart and Stephanie divorced, and Stuart married Andrea Witty in 1986.[2][3]

James died on 10 May 2023, aged 77. He was survived by his wife Andrea, two children, and four grandchildren.[3]
