Steve Madden (radio presenter)
Steve Madden is a British radio presenter and voiceover artist.[1]
Background
[edit]Madden was born in South London. He was raised in Kingston upon Thames.[2] He attended Tiffin School in Kingston upon Thames and studied English Literature at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, graduating in the mid-1970s.[3]
Career
[edit]Madden first worked as a teacher.[4]
Madden joined the BBC's Graduate Training programme in 1978.[5] In the early 1980s, he worked as a producer on BBC radio programmes.[6] From 1982 until 1983, he was announcer on BBC Radio 4. He was also heard on the BBC World Service in the early half of the 1980s.
In early 1985, Madden began presenting Night Ride on BBC Radio 2 on Saturday mornings, Sunday mornings and Monday mornings, starting at 1am.[7] In 1990, he was presenting Night Ride on four weekdays per week, starting at 1am.[8] In 1996, he was presenting an overnight show on five weekdays per week, starting at 00:05am.[9] On the 2nd of October 1998, he presented his last Radio 2 overnight show.[10]
Some time after leaving BBC Radio 2, Madden presented a show on weekday evenings which was broadcast on BBC Radio Cambridgeshire, BBC Essex, BBC Three Counties Radio, BBC Radio Suffolk, BBC Radio Northampton and BBC Radio Norfolk. He presented the show for five years.[2]
Some time after finishing this show, Madden joined BBC Radio Berkshire to present the early breakfast show. In 2008, this was broadcast between 5am and 7am.[11] In 2012, it was still being broadcast between 5am and 7am.[12] However, in 2013, the show was being broadcast from 5:30am and 7am.[13] In 2016, Madden began presenting an additional show on Saturdays for the station between 11am and 1pm; the show had a strong emphasis on older pop music.[14] Madden's weekday early breakfast show show continued to have a 5:30am start time until it ended in 2020, along with Madden's Saturday show, when BBC Local Radio stations' schedules changed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the pandemic's effects. In the later years of its broadcast, and possibly earlier, every one of Madden's early show contained Madden's commentary on various topics, text-based contributions from listeners, a review of the newspapers, travel updates, news updates and music. When Madden's weekday early breakfast show and Saturday show ended, Madden stopped presenting regularly on BBC Radio Berkshire.
In late 2023 or early 2024, Madden joined Victory Radio, a radio station broadcasting on DAB in Portsmouth, to present late-evening shows on weekends.[15]
Madden also worked as a continuity announcer on BBC television in the late 1980s.[2] In addition, he has worked at BFBS, the British Forces Broadcasting Service.[4]
He has provided voiceovers for commercial clients.[16]
Madden's voice has been heard on several airlines' in-flight entertainment systems, such as the in-flight entertainment systems of Qatar Airways and Singapore Airlines.[16]
