St John the Evangelist Church[1] is the parish church[2] of Washingborough in Lincolnshire, England. It is one of the oldest buildings in the village.

History

[edit]

The church was built around 1170 and is likely to have replaced a much earlier structure on the site.[3] It was restored between 1859 and 1861 by George Gilbert Scott and Henry Goddard and this saw extensive refurbishment, rebuilding and modernizing of the entire church exterior and building. The church played an important role as a place of refuge during World War I for many Belgium refugees.[4] As a result of this, the church was given many features and aesthetics including Stained glass windows, paintings and a Norman font as a thank you for its help during the difficult period of war and politics.[5]

The churchyard was extended twice in its long history and was given an entry point consisting of both piers and wrought iron gates in 1824. These still exist today and offer access to both the churchyard an another entrance to the church itself. The church was given a grade listed I status in 1967.[6]

Present day

[edit]

The church continues to serve both a place of worship and community hub for both residents and visitors. It can also be seen on the skyline on clear days from both the Water Rail Way and on the opposite side of the River Witham.[7]
