Sophie Román Haug (born 4 June 1999) is a Norwegian professional footballer who plays as a forward for English Women's Super League club Liverpool and the Norway national team.

Club career

[edit]

After playing for Kløfta Idrettslag, she went to LSK Kvinner in 2015. She was heavily involved in her team winning both the cup and the league in 2018, with 14 league goals. She became LSK's top scorer in 2020 with eight goals. In 2021, she was named to the team of the year in the Toppserien by NTB, after nine goals in 15 league games.[1][2]

In January 2022, she signed for Roma, becoming the most expensive sale from LSK Kvinner ever.[3][4]

In September 2023, she signed for Liverpool for an undisclosed fee.[5] She scored her first goal for Liverpool on 12 November 2023 against Tottenham Hotspur, equalizing the game 1-1 in the 66th minute.[6]

Youth

[edit]

Haug had an extensive career for Norwegian youth national teams.[7] She has international matches for U15, U16, U17, U19, U23, and the senior Norwegian national team.

On 21 July 2018, she scored a goal in a 1–0 victory over France during the UEFA Under-19 European Championship.[8]

Senior

[edit]

Haug was called up for the Norwegian senior national team for the first time in 2018.[9] In 2022, she was selected for the national team's squad for the 2022 UEFA European Championships. Her debut came on 29 June 2022 in a friendly match against Denmark.[10]

She scored her first three senior national team goals in the World Cup qualifier at home against Albania, on 6 September 2022, which ended in a 5–0 victory.[11][12]

On 19 June 2023, she was included in the 23-player Norwegian squad for the FIFA Women's World Cup 2023.[13] On 30 July, she scored a hat-trick in a 6–0 victory over the Philippines in the last World Cup group stage match, which qualified her country to the knockout phase.[14] It was the fourth instance of a Norwegaian player scoring a hat-trick at the Women's World Cup and the first since 2007.
