Soner Baskaya

Yusuf Soner Başkaya (born April 2, 1976, Hekimhan, Turkey) is a Turkish economist and Professor of Economics at the Adam Smith Business School, University of Glasgow.[1] He previously held various positions at the Central Bank of Turkey, including roles as Director of the Communications and Foreign Relations Department and Deputy General Manager of the Research Department. During Turkey's G20 Presidency in 2015, he served as Deputy's Deputy at the Central Bank of Turkey.[2]

Education and career

He obtained a B.A. in economics from Bogaziçi University, Istanbul, in 1998, followed by an M.Sc. in economics from Middle East Technical University, Ankara, in 2001.[3] Between 1998 and 2001, he worked as a Researcher in the Research Department of the Central Bank of Turkey.[4] In 2001, he was awarded a fellowship by the Central Bank of Turkey to pursue a Ph.D. in economics at Brown University, where he later completed both his MA and Ph.D. degrees.[5][6]

Throughout his career, Başkaya has taught at various academic institutions, including the London School of Economics, Dartmouth College, Brown University, Bilkent University, and Middle East Technical University.[7][1] He has also held positions as a Fellow in the Department of Management at the London School of Economics and as a Research Fellow at the Bank for International Settlements.[8][1] In 2024, he became Professor of Economics at the University of Glasgow.[1]

Research

Başkaya's research focuses on macroeconomics, monetary economics, central banking, financial stability, applied econometrics, and labor economics. His studies examine the effects of international financial conditions on domestic economies, including topics such as capital flows, credit cycles, and the international credit channel.[9][10]
