The association was established in 2011[1] The current Chairman and General Secretary is Mohamed Abdi Dixood and Samatar Mohamed Abdillahi respectively.[2]

Somaliland became a member of the Confederation of Independent Football Associations (CONIFA) in 2015 and participated in the 2016 CONIFA World Football Cup held in Abkhazia.[3] Somaliland was announced the as the host of the 2020 edition of the tournament in 2019, but this was later revoked after concerns regarding their ability to fund the tournament.[4][5] Somaliland would later leave the organisation and is no longer affiliated with any governing body.
