Singapennae (transl.The Woman Brave as a Lion) is an Indian Tamil television drama, starring Maneesha Mahesh, Darshak Gowda and Amal Jith. It was directed by Dhanush Krishna. The series premiered on 9 October 2023 Sun TV from Monday to Saturday. It is also available on the digital platform Sun NXT. This series became one of the most watched serials in Tamil Nadu.[1]

Plot

Anandhi (Maneesha Mahesh) is a brave village girl. Due to financial troubles in her family, she goes to Chennai to work in a garments company owned by Thillai Rajan. Anbu (Amal Jith), who works as a supervisor in the company helps Anandhi (Maneesha Mahesh) to get a job in the same company. Due to a misunderstanding, Anandhi (Maneesha Mahesh) hates Anbu (Amal Jith).

Anbu (Amal Jith) decides to approach Anandhi (Maneesha Mahesh) in a different way using a pseudonym "Azhagan" and gifted Anandhi (Maneesha Mahesh)'s favourite bicycle to her with a courier. Now Anandhi (Maneesha Mahesh) wants to meet Azhagan and starts falling in love with him though she never knew who Azhagan is.

Anbu (Amal Jith) is constantly humiliated by Anandhi (Maneesha Mahesh), so he never reveals that he is Azhagan to her. But soon Anandhi (Maneesha Mahesh) learns about the good nature of Anbu (Amal Jith) and apologizes to him for her misunderstanding. Now Anbu (Amal Jith) and Anandhi (Maneesha Mahesh) become friends but Anbu (Amal Jith) hesitates to reveal to her that he is Azhagan. Meanwhile, Mahesh (Darshak Gowda)-(CEO of garments company) also develops romantic feelings for Anandhi (Maneesha Mahesh), but hesitates to tell her.

Mithra (VJ Bavithra), Mahesh (Darshak Gowda)'s childhood friend who had loved Mahesh (Darshak Gowda), became Anandhi (Maneesha Mahesh)'s nemesis and stays with her in the same hostel. Mithra (VJ Bavithra) learns about "Azhagan" and asks her college friend Nandha to join the garments company to convince Anandhi (Maneesha Mahesh) to believe that he is "Azhagan". Finally Nandha is exposed and arrested.

Now Anbu (Amal Jith) and Mahesh (Darshak Gowda) try to win the love of Anandhi (Maneesha Mahesh) without knowing that they Love triangle In entertainment love the same girl.

Development

On July end 2023, Sun TV confirmed that it would distribute the new Tamil serial, to be produced by Miracle Media.[2] The series shoot began in August 2023 and the first promo was released on 18 September 2023. The show is directed by Dhanush Krishna.[3]

Casting

Newcomer actress Maneesha Mahesh was cast as the female lead Anandhi,[4] Amal Jith plays the male lead alongside her, marking his return after Amman. Darshak Gowda was cast as the second male lead role, marking his return after 'Arunthathi' . Actress Rama play of the role of Pechiyamma.[5]

In October 2023, VJ Bavithra was cast as Mithira (Main Antogonist).[6] In November 2023, Rekha Angelina was cast as Manimegalai.[7]

Release

The first promo was released on 18 September 2023 featuring Maneesha Mahesh and Rama.[8] The second promo was unveiled on 30 September 2023,[9] and the third promo was unveiled on 2 October 2023, featuring Maneesha Mahesh tell the story and revealing the release date.[10]

The show started airing on Sun TV on 9 October 2023, replacing Vanathai Pola.[11] This series was launched along with Zee Tamil's series Nala Damayanthi and Sandhya Raagam.[12]

Reception

The show got a TVR of 10.28 on launching week on 9 October 2023. On its launch week it became a top 5 serial of Sun TV.[13] Singapennae became one of the most watched Tamil television programs in 2023. In January 2024, the series was the most watched Tamil-language television series with an 11.88 TVR.[14]

Adaptations

Since February 2024, Singapennae has been remade in other languages such as in Kannada, Telugu and Malayalam. It is broadcast on Sun TV Network's group of channels in the respective languages.
