Sariha Belén Moya Angulo (born 1986 or 1987)[1] is an Ecuadorian economist and politician who has been the acting Vice President of Ecuador since 2024. She was selected by President Daniel Noboa, replacing suspended Vice President Verónica Abad Rojas.[2] She previously served as National Secretary of Planning under the Noboa administration from 2023 to 2024.[3]

Personal life

[edit]

Moya studied at the Pontifical Catholic University of Ecuador and earned a master's degree in economics at Carlos III University of Madrid.[4]

Political career

[edit]

Moya also worked for the National Planning Secretariat between October 2012 to August 2013 in the role of planning and budget analyst.[4] From January 2016 to June 2017, she served as Director of Monitoring and Evaluation of the National Development Plan of Ecuador.[4]

After Daniel Noboa was elected President of Ecuador in 2023, Noboa initially planned to nominate Moya as Minister of Economy and Finance.[4][5] However, she was appointed as National Secretary of Planning instead.[4]

Vice Presidency

[edit]

On 9 November 2024, Vice President Verónica Abad Rojas was temporarily suspended as vice president by the Ecuadorian government after failing to leave Israel and travel to Turkey.[6] Noboa selected Moya as acting vice president two days later on 11 November.[2][4] Noboa praised Moya's public service and management track record as the reason behind his selection of Moya.[7]

As acting vice president, Moya will temporarily replace Noboa as president during the electoral campaign days of the 2025 general election. This would occur for 30 days during the first round from 5 January to 6 February 2025 and again in the event of a second round for another 18 days, from 24 March to 10 April.[8]
