Sarah Hamilton is a Canadian politician currently serving as the Edmonton City Councillor for Ward sipiwiyiniwak. Elected in the 2017 municipal election, Hamilton has participated in various council decisions but faced criticism for attendance and ethical concerns in recent years.[1][2]

Early life and education

[edit]

Hamilton was born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta. She completed her education at the University of Alberta and later pursued graduate studies in communication.[3]

Political career

[edit]

Hamilton was elected as councillor for Ward 5 in 2017 and re-elected under the revised ward system in 2021 for Ward sipiwiyiniwak. During her time in office, Hamilton has been active in discussions surrounding municipal budgets, policing, and housing initiatives.[4]

Controversies

[edit]

Hamilton has been criticized for her attendance record at council meetings, with reports indicating a number of missed sessions during critical discussions.[5] Additionally, concerns regarding Hamilton's adherence to council ethics were raised after she allegedly violated policy on public consultation, drawing public and media scrutiny.[6]

Her voting record on controversial city policies, such as handling the encampment removal process, has also sparked debate. Critics argue that certain approaches taken during her term failed to align with Edmonton’s standard protocols for addressing homelessness, particularly under extreme weather conditions.[7][8]

Personal life

[edit]

Hamilton resides in Edmonton and maintains a private life outside of her public duties.[1]
