Sagir Adamu Abbas is a Nigerian academic who serves as the 11th Vice chancellor of Bayero University Kano.[2]

Early life and education

Sagir Adamu Abbas was born on 22 April 1962, in the Yan Katifa, Kantudu Madabo area of Kano Municipal Local Government Area, Kano State.[citation needed]

Career

Abbas began his career as a lecturer in the Department of Mathematics at Sa’adatu Rimi College of Education, Kumbotso. He joined Bayero University Kano as Assistant Lecturer in 1991 and has held various positions, including Head of the Department of Education, Sub-Dean, Deputy Dean, and Acting Dean of the Faculty of Education.

Abbas was appointed Director of the Development Office from 2004 to 2007. Between April 2010 and September 2013, he served as Senior Special Assistant to the former Minister of Education, Professor Ruqayyah Ahmed Rufa'i. He also was the Director of the Directorate of Research, Innovation, and Partnerships. On 26 March 2015, the Governing Council of Bayero University Kano appointed Abbas as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics), succeeding Professor Hafiz Abubakar.[3]

In 2020, Abbas became the 11th Vice-Chancellor of Bayero University Kano.[4][5][6]

Achievement as Vice chancellor

Under the leadership of Sagir Abbas, the 11th Vice-Chancellor, Bayero University Kano has achieved numerous milestones and received various awards, enhancing its international ranking, and Bayero University Kano has been ranked among the top universities in Sub-Saharan Africa.[7] During his tenure, the university has also implemented a program employing students for part-time work within the campus community. These roles include monitoring school facilities and cleaning the environment, with students receiving monthly compensation for their efforts.[8]

On 22 July, during the 56th university congregation meeting, Vice-Chancellor Sagir Abbas announced that millions of naira had been allocated as palliative measures to ease the financial burden caused by increases in petroleum prices and registration fees. He also confirmed that interest-free loans would be available to staff members.[9]
