Plans for completion
[edit]@CalligrapherAR: Hello and thank you for creating this portal. What plans do you have for completing it? For a faith with so many followers, we might expect something along the lines of Portal:Catholic Church. Alternatively, if the idea is simply to showcase Sunni Islam and a few related articles, that might be better done by improving the coverage of the existing Portal:Islam, with which this portal would have a broad overlap. WikiProject Portals should be able to help with any advice you may want. Certes (talk) 00:26, 15 December 2020 (UTC)
- @Certes: It's only been 13 days since I joined Wikipedia, I don't know exactly how to complete this portal, can you help me? CalligrapherAR (talk) 13:45, 15 December 2020 (UTC)
- @CalligrapherAR: Welcome! Having seen that over 80% of Muslims are Sunni, I think the existing Islam portal might be the best place to showcase Sunni articles. If we create a second portal then it would double the maintenance effort and most of their content would be duplicated. It's qualitatively like the Catholic Church portal, but quantitatively different as Catholics make up only about 50% of Christians and Wikipedia has significant coverage of other forms of Christianity to showcase. Although it's tempting to make another portal, I think it might be better to improve Sunni coverage within Portal:Islam instead, whilst maintaining appropriate coverage of other forms of Islam. We could then replace the new portal by a redirect to Portal:Islam. Certes (talk) 14:37, 15 December 2020 (UTC)
- Pinging Northamerica1000 who has kindly expanded the portal and may have useful advice. Certes (talk) 12:17, 16 December 2020 (UTC)
- @Certes: Not much to say at this time. Haven't researched the subject enough to form an opinion about whether this should stand or be merged. Maybe later. If the portal is to stand, we need some articles in it. North America1000 12:21, 16 December 2020 (UTC)
- @Certes and Northamerica1000: this portal was created by a sock puppet and, in a way, can therefore eligible for speedy deletion under WP:G5. However, I will leave that decision up to you. --HyperGaruda (talk) 06:50, 19 December 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks, HyperGaruda. Now we know the creator's status, I'm leaning towards G5 or at least MfD. Although the topic is important, it mostly overlaps the much better Portal:Islam, which could easily be expanded with more Sunni coverage if anyone sees a need. Certes (talk) 11:54, 19 December 2020 (UTC)
- Another option is to make this page a redirect to the better portal. I generally dislike evading the XfD process in that way, but if a page qualifies for G5 then it may be a proper course of action. That would leave the old version in history for anyone to revive. Any other opinions? Certes (talk) 12:21, 19 December 2020 (UTC)
- I agree, redirecting is a good alternative to outright deletion. --HyperGaruda (talk) 06:55, 21 December 2020 (UTC)
- Replaced by a redirect. No incoming links from reader-facing pages. That just leaves /box-header and /Banner to deal with. Certes (talk) 11:41, 21 December 2020 (UTC)
