New look
[edit]I did some redesigning on the portal (been planning it for a long time but now that your attention was called to the portal, I really had to do it before someone beats me to it :) I got the banner idea from German Wikipedia's Portal Ungarn, though theirs looks too dark so I created a new one. Also, I think the text was crammed between too many pictures, and we should include the links to the descriptions of the flag and coat of arms. Please take a look at it, I'd appreciate some opinion (esp. on how it looks on different resolutions, mine's 1024x768). – Alensha 寫 词 14:36, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
- Its somewhat scary in 800x600... --Tgr 10:14, 24 June 2006 (UTC)
- Oooops... Do all portals look like this in 800x600? (if not, maybe I can copy their source...) – Alensha 寫 词 13:38, 24 June 2006 (UTC)
- Seems to be a global problem, all portals I checked look odd on 800x600 (Portal:Astronomy, Portal:European Union, de:Portal:Ungarn). Maybe with div styles it can be corrected but I'm not an expert on div. – Alensha 寫 词 15:53, 24 June 2006 (UTC)
Things to do
[edit]- Find out why the "edit" links don't work – it'd be much easier to update the sections if they worked
- Decide how often will we update the selected article and pictures and the Did you know. Plan the nomination process.
- Decide if we have enough participants to run the Hungary News section (it's kind of embarrassing that it was last updated when Sólyom became president…)
- A template wizard also should find a more elegant solution to arrange the text & pictures of the flag & CoA in the intro. Right now it has br and center tags. (Sorry. :)
- Someone who knows about licensing please check in Commons if the license status for the banner is good, it was made of 7 different pics with about 3-4 different licenses, I guessed cc-by-sa-2.5 and GFDL will do, but I'm not sure.

[edit]Why is that bad-looking old ruin the first picture in the line? It can make visitors think that Hungary is in such a terrible state...--Mathae 23:49, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
Anyway, it's nice, and even though it's great that not that half-armed robber became our president, perhaps other things have occurred since then. --Mathae 23:51, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
- By old ruin did you mean the Parliament? :D BTW I know the news are quite old but couldn't think of anything else of importance which could replace it... the parliamentary elections? that was months ago and besides, who wants to see Gyurcsány's face there? or Bush's visit? ewww... ot the water pollution in Miskolc? I'd be accused of trying to over-Miskolcifying the page... which I will do, but more subtly, changing one picture first to a Miskolc-related one, then a second picture...
- Half-armed robber, LOL... My only argument against Szili was that her name is pronounced "silly", which is not exactly the best name for someone who is supposed to represent the country.
"which I will do, but more subtly" - I knew I could count on that :). Perhaps that Bush-guy or what's his name can be interesting. What else? Perhaps about the arrogance and open lies of the government? Or the restrictive reforms?--Mathae 22:29, 24 June 2006 (UTC)
- that Bush guy is definitely not important, he's just some chieftain of some 50 colonies at the other end of the world… :-))) do you really want to see Bush on our portal? I'd rather see Gyurcsány there, and I really dislike Gyurcsány... Mr. Orbán made our job here really hard by not winning the elections :( I don't know what else qualifies as news, maybe... there was a big hailstorm 2 days ago in Miskolc; also, the water is now drinkable in Miskolc; also, the opera festival has just ended in Miskolc; also, from this Friday the Cave Bath in Miskolc will be open at nights too till August; also, complete reconstruction of the Heroes' Square in Miskolc is going on; also, the traffic went totally crazy in Miskolc, because the whole downtown is being refashioned... you see, lots of important things happen in Hungary, we just have to choose :) – Alensha 寫 词 23:39, 24 June 2006 (UTC)
"It is known locally as the Country of the Magyars." What is this exactly thought to be meaning?--Mathae 22:31, 24 June 2006 (UTC)
- I guess it means that locally the country is known as Magyarország. – Alensha 寫 词 23:39, 24 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit]Okay, since most of the Hungarians keep their interest in the portal remarkably well hidden, I declare myself the maintainer, caretaker and Supreme Goddess of the portal. The selected article, picture and "Did you know?" will be updated every 2 weeks, starting from Saturday. twice a month, on 1st and 15th. The News section will temporarily be removed (we haven't got enough editors who could write about the most current events), and it will be replaced with a Selected anniversaries box (with content shamelessly copied from Hungarian Wikipedia where the anniversary section is updated quite regularly). Suggestions for selected stuff can be put here. If any of you don't agree, scream now or be silent forever. – Alensha 寫 词 18:37, 28 June 2006 (UTC)

Suggestions
[edit]Sorry, I can't help you now, I have so many works here, but I tell you my suggestions:
- Things you can do box: should have examples of Hungary and Geography stubs. It can help contributors to work.
- Wikiprojects box: these are not wikiprojects.
- Did you know… box: could be longer to equalize the right side boxes.
- Associated Wikimedia box would be needed
- You should consider to change to currentyear/currentweek system... (see Portal:Medicine) :)

I would like to suggest for selected article on 15 July the following. --Hunadam (=Adapa!) 17:43, 6 July 2006 (UTC)
On 22 July 2006, Hungarians remember of the 550th anniversary of the great victory of Nándorfehérvár (or siege of Belgrade).
After the fall of Constantinople in 1453, Ottoman sultan Mehmed II was rallying his resources in order to subjugate the Kingdom of Hungary. His immediate objective was the border fort (Hungarian végvár) of the town of Belgrade (in old Hungarian: Nándorfehérvár). John Hunyadi, a Hungarian nobleman and warlord from a Wallachian lineage, who fought many battles against the Ottomans in the previous two decades, expected just such an attack.
The siege took place between 4-22 July 1456. It eventually escalated into a major battle, during which Hunyadi led a sudden counterattack that overran the Turkish camp, ultimately compelling the wounded Sultan Mehmet II to lift the siege and retreat. The siege of Belgrade "decided the fate of Christendom"1.
The noon bell ordered by Pope Callixtus III commemorates the victory throughout the Christian world to this day.

- I was searching for the English term for gémeskút while writing this; on the portal itself it's already called "sweep well" (Wiki doesn't have an article for it, but Google knows this term). This talk page is usually watched by the maintainers of the portal only (=me), but in case an English-speaking someone happens to come here, Hortobágyi gémeskút means "a sweep well on the Hortobágy (which is a f**king big, boring plain occupying most of Southern Hungary, surrounding a shabby little town called Debrecen whose only claim to fame is that a would-be enwiki admin, for some mysteriously unexplainable reason, chose to live there.) – Alensha talk 20:41, 30 September 2006 (UTC)

funny, but the Did you know? was the hardest now, all my first ideas were wrong for some reason... Mancs is formally still up for deletion, though it has no chance to be deleted; hu:Művészetek Háza doesn't have an EnWiki article now (even though I thought I already wrote it...), Cave Bath will be featured on the portal when I have a pic about the inside too, b/c it's the interesting about it; University of Pécs is still a stub, Bibliotheca Corviniana wil be featured when it has the picture at least one of the codices... – Alensha talk 17:29, 30 September 2006 (UTC)
A proposal for the 8th update
[edit]My proposal for the following selected article. --Hunadam 08:59, 9 October 2006 (UTC)
The Hungarian Revolution of 1956 (23 Oct - 10 Nov), was a spontaneous nationwide revolt against the Communist dictatorship, the State Police (ÁVH), and Soviet domination. On 23 October, it began as a peaceful student demonstration which quickly attracted more than 200,000 Budapest inhabitants to the Parliament building. When protesters were fired upon from the windows of the Radio building, the population rose against the dictatorship. The revolt spread quickly across Hungary. On 3 November a national government was formed which disbanded ÁVH, declared its intention to withdraw from the Warsaw Pact and pledged to re-establish multiparty democracy. On 4 November, a large Soviet force invaded. Thousands of civilians fighted against them, but their organized resistance was crushed by 10 November. As a consequence, mass arrests began, and an estimated 200,000 Hungarians fled as refugees. All public discussion about the revolution was suppressed in Hungary for over 30 years. Since the political changes in 1990, the day of the beginning of the revolution, 23 October, is a national holiday in Hungary.
Articles to work on
[edit]- Greater Hungary (political concept), but all the Greater Hungary articles are full of nonsense and/or POV, or with simply poor content.
- Kingdom of Hungary - full of foreign nationalism
- Magyarization - not to mention - a lot of pages are full with this and even more unsorced POVs.
- Pannonian basin before Hungary
- Hungarian people
- History of Hungary
All for same reasons. You know. PANONIAN, Juro, Tankred and such guys, who knows everithing just a bit better :) And knows history in a very very...ummm...unique way :) --VinceB 01:03, 9 October 2006 (UTC)

Hungarian Muslim population
[edit]I don't know if this is the right place.. I hope somebody can help.
The page Islam in Hungary is being constantly updated all the time regarding the number of Muslims in the country. There are various opinions. The official census brings 3,200, but other sources bring 6,000 and even 60,000. It is not a simple topic, because the definition of Muslim is not clear cut and there are different ways of counting the Muslim population.
I had tried putting up a general overview of the different opinions but it was again changed to show only one opinion. I think this issue should be discussed and the page changed so that it won't be constantly updated the way it is now. Misheu 07:09, 11 May 2007 (UTC)

New category
[edit]I'm not Magyar myself, but I created a new category: Hungarian trade unionists. Unfortunately, it's almost empty now, except for the active member of the actor's union who fled the country in 1919 and later made a name for himself on the screen. I know the trade union movement was viciously suppressed for long periods; but surely there are leaders and activists of note in Hungary's long proud history! --Orange Mike | Talk 16:36, 2 April 2010 (UTC)

Garbled/garbage translation
[edit]The text of Nyíregyháza seriously needs review and revision by someone who can read Hungarian (I can't) and whose English is fluent, preferably native. Kudpung describes it as "Very poor machine translation".
For example, the section "Religions, Churches" begins:
- Roman Catholic - At the 2011 census, 25,132 people, 20.1% of the population identified themselves as belonging to a particular religion (in 2001 compared to 8365-strong decrease).
The phrase in parentheses makes no sense in English; my best guess is that it means "8365 fewer than in 2001". And all the religion paragraphs begin this way.
