Assigned Tasks
[edit]List of Topics with list of subtopics
[edit]Tannermp (talk) AnneZ Sharkers
- Here are a few general categories I think should be added to Topics section. Feel free to add or change anything if you don't agree with any of my selections (I am also adding these to the Topic section of the Portal page, and they will need some subtopics as well as they are very broad) I also have started elaborating some of the subtopics in the Design category Tannermp (talk) 19:51, 10 May 2014 (UTC)
- Usability (Usability testing, Cognitive walkthrough, heuristic evaluation, affordance, usability insepction, usability engineering)
- Design (User Experience Design, Value Sensitive Design, Database design, Flat UI design, Interaction design, participatory design, user-centered design)
- User Experience (Accessibility, Collaboratory, First-Time user experience, Interactivity)
- Technology (Artificial Intelligence, Brain-Computer interface, Collaborative software, Graphical user interface, Prototype)
- Psychology (Ecological psychology, social affordance, transparency, social translucence, persuasive technology)
- Theory and Concepts (Activity theory, Actor network theory, card sorting, Fitt's law, Data visualization, Gender HCI)
- People
- I changed the "Other" category to People as well as expanded the current sub topics on many of the other categories (I am not sure if the changes are showing up however, but they are able to be seen when you edit the Topics section. Feel free to make changes, as I am not entirely convinced that everything I added belongs in the correct category. Tannermp (talk) 23:30, 16 May 2014 (UTC)
- The changes are not showing up on the portal page, but they are in showing up in the sections individual page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portal:Human%E2%80%93computer_interaction/Topics). Anyone know why this is? Thanks! Tannermp (talk) 23:33, 16 May 2014 (UTC)
- The changes showed, but the format is still being weird. I'm wondering if its a problem with the template, possibly? Tannermp (talk) 03:52, 17 May 2014 (UTC)
- I was trying to encompass the whole list of topics within the box and could not figure out how to do so. Is this the same thing you are talking about? I tried seeing if anything was off on the template as well and was unable to find anything.Sharkers (talk) 23:15, 19 May 2014 (UTC)
Design/Layout
[edit](Pgrobison (talk)) (Candice Juan (talk))
- I added some information to the Read page and make it looks purple... Somehow I cannot contact Pgrobison...So shall we discuss here?Candice Juan (talk) 04:08, 7 May 2014 (UTC)
- I used the box skeleton template to reformat the portal. It now has many red links. These links are to pages that need to be created, and within them we can link to our selected article, biography, etc. This is where you guys can add the content articles you find into the portal. Pgrobison (talk) 22:28, 7 May 2014 (UTC)
- A quick note, I do not think we need a categories section if we already have a Topics section (I feel like having both is somewhat redundant. Anyone else agree?) Tannermp (talk) 20:17, 10 May 2014 (UTC)
- I agree with that. Candice Juan (talk) 21:47, 10 May 2014 (UTC)
- I spent a long time figuring out how to do editing in each section. For example, I did something in the section of biography. But I'm sure I did something wrong and I really don't know how to make it right. Please help!! Thanks!!Weariness (talk) 09:05, 14 May 2014 (UTC)
- The selected article section is sort of long, and is making the portal page harder to navigate, is there anyway we could make it shorter so it doesn't take up half the page? Tannermp (talk) 23:32, 16 May 2014 (UTC)
- All fixed! thanks! Tannermp (talk) 20:21, 18 May 2014 (UTC)
Featured HCI articles/topics
[edit]marge6914 Weariness
- We are going to go out and find selected biographies, photos, articles, and quotes, and then determine which we want to use for the portal. Marge6914 (talk) 00:42, 6 May 2014 (UTC)
- I think that the selected biography should be Don_Norman, what do you think? Marge6914 (talk) 23:46, 6 May 2014 (UTC)
- I think this person fits our portal, but there is not much information about how he relates to the UX design that I think is very important to be talked about. How about Jef_Raskin or Alan_Cooper? It seems there are lots of information about their specific user experience.Weariness (talk) 18:36, 8 May 2014 (UTC)
- I really like Jef_Raskin, let's do that one! Marge6914 (talk) 02:37, 9 May 2014 (UTC)
- Sure!!Weariness (talk) 04:29, 10 May 2014 (UTC)
- I found a quote by Jesse_James_Garrett that I think would be a great quote for the HCI page: http://www.inspireux.com/2009/03/25/what-makes-people-passionate-pure-and-simple-is-great-experiences/ Marge6914 (talk) 23:46, 6 May 2014 (UTC)
- Yeah, it's great!! How about this one “Don't make me think” by Steve Krug?? I like simple quote because I think it's attractive to most of people who doesn't know much about HCI.Weariness (talk) 18:45, 8 May 2014 (UTC)
- I like that, but I don't know that it's a quote by Steve_Krug, I think it's just his book title. I vote for the Jesse_James_Garrett quote. Marge6914 (talk) 02:37, 9 May 2014 (UTC)
- I found it here. https://www.goodreads.com/author/quotes/2298.Steve_KrugWeariness (talk) 04:29, 10 May 2014 (UTC)
- Yeah... I still don't like that as a quote, since it's his book title. If you want to use one of the other quotes on that page, I might be OK with that. How about this one? “Get rid of half the words on each page, then get rid of half of what’s left.” Marge6914 (talk) 18:38, 10 May 2014 (UTC)
- We can use the Jesse_James_Garrett quote!!Weariness (talk) 20:04, 10 May 2014 (UTC)
- The "Selected Quote" box is missing? Otherwise I would add the quote there. Did we decide not to put a quote on the portal? Pgrobison (talk) 02:39, 15 May 2014 (UTC)
- I think we decide to put a quote on the portal. Can you add it please?Weariness (talk) 08:09, 15 May 2014 (UTC)
- I had a hard time finding a picture for use. What do you think of this? https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File%3AELiving_Campus_Paper_Prototype_2.jpg By Samuel Mann [CC-BY-2.0 (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0)], via Wikimedia Commons from Wikimedia Commons Marge6914 (talk) 23:46, 6 May 2014 (UTC)
- I like the structure of this picture, but it's just not clear enough I think. I had a hard time finding pictures too!! How about this one?? https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:MediaSpaceConceptDrawing1982_w600.jpg By E.d.stults, via Wikimedia Commons from Wikimedia Commons Weariness (talk) 18:59, 8 May 2014 (UTC)
- I'm not sure about that one, it doesn't say "HCI" to me, it looks like it's describing how to videotape a group and show it to observers on the other side on a computer. This could be for anything. Maybe we can submit our own image. Do you have any HCI-related images that you own? I uploaded this affinity diagram image so we can use it if you want to https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Affinity_Diagram.png Marge6914 (talk) 02:37, 9 May 2014 (UTC)
- I don't have a picture of my own and it's really hard to find one in the commons!! I think we can use yours.Weariness (talk) 20:04, 10 May 2014 (UTC)
- Great!Marge6914 (talk) 18:38, 10 May 2014 (UTC)
- I transcluded the picture into the selected pictures box, look okay? Pgrobison (talk) 03:42, 15 May 2014 (UTC)
- It looks great! Thank you!!Weariness (talk) 08:04, 15 May 2014 (UTC)
- As far as the selected article, how about this one? Human-Computer_Interaction_Institute Marge6914 (talk) 23:46, 6 May 2014 (UTC)
- I added the small blurb that was originally the only content in the portal as part of a working introduction for now Pgrobison (talk) 22:41, 7 May 2014 (UTC)
- I think this article is more like an introduction to the academic organization, which doesn't quite fit our portal. I think this one can be understood by the public generally. Outline_of_human–computer_interaction Weariness (talk) 19:13, 8 May 2014 (UTC)
- But do we really want to include an article that has been flagged as inappropriate and might someday be removed? I think we can pick a better article than that categorization. Additionally, we're putting a lot of that information on our categories section of this portal. How about Interaction_design? Marge6914 (talk) 02:37, 9 May 2014 (UTC)
- I'm confused. Do we want an inappropriate article or an appropriate article? I picked Outline_of_human–computer_interaction because I think it is appropriate and I think Human-Computer_Interaction_Institute is inappropriate.Weariness (talk) 04:42, 10 May 2014 (UTC)
- Yes, we do want to use an appropriate article, that's my point. The article Outline_of_human–computer_interaction is set up as an article but on its Talk page they argue that it's inappropriate to set it up as an article because it's actually a categorization, and there's already a Wikipedia Categorization guideline that this article goes against. So, in the future it might be integrated into the categorization and this article will be removed. Since it's not a "proper" article, my concern is that we will use it and someday it might go away. I know that Interaction_design will not go away, if anything it will expand and become better. And, it's totally related to HCI. That's why I think we should use that one, or a different one, but not the outline one. Marge6914 (talk) 18:38, 10 May 2014 (UTC)
- Ok, I see. Let's use Interaction_design!!Weariness (talk) 20:04, 10 May 2014 (UTC)
- I transcluded the intro of Interaction_design into the selected article section, what do you think? Pgrobison (talk) 03:42, 15 May 2014 (UTC)
- I'm so sorry!!!!! Actually I transcluded the person into the biography section, but I didn't think the way I did was right. So I checked your editing and wanted to revise it by myself. But I just ruined your work and I didn't know how to get it back (you can check the history to see my work > <). I am so SORRY!! I hope you won't mad at me. > < And could you teach me how to transclude?? Thank you!!Weariness (talk) 07:57, 15 May 2014 (UTC)
- I need to talk to Michael on monday about this. It seems like the page has 5 subpages dedicated to selected articles/pictures and pressing that "Show New Selection" button randomly shows different selections. The only problem is, we only have 1 selected article up there, so it takes a while to cycle through and get both of the ones I added up there at once. I'm going to talk to Michael about maybe finding a better way to format the page. Pgrobison (talk) 20:14, 15 May 2014 (UTC)

[edit]Links to Related Portals
[edit]- There are a few related portals on the HCI project page we could probably use for this section of the portal page as well Tannermp (talk) 20:15, 10 May 2014 (UTC)
- Definitely want to add Portal:Human–computer_interaction, how about also adding Portal:Information_technology, Portal:Computer_graphics, Portal:Design, Portal:Psychology for a few? Marge6914 (talk) 22:02, 15 May 2014 (UTC)
- I think we can interact Portal: Computer science with our portal as well.Weariness (talk) 05:23, 16 May 2014 (UTC)

Things to do Section
[edit]- I think we can have a section of associated wikimedia.Weariness (talk) 16:20, 11 May 2014 (UTC)
- The Human-computer interaction box at the top of the portal should contain information from Human-computer_interaction, like Portal:Computer_science has. Marge6914 (talk) 21:54, 15 May 2014 (UTC)
Begin collecting information for different portal sections

Name
[edit]I have boldly renamed the portal to match the capitalisation and hyphenation of the main article Human–computer interaction. It is much easier to do this before dozens of sub-pages have been created. -- John of Reading (talk) 06:05, 6 May 2014 (UTC)
