A&M Christening

I believe in being terse, but this is morose. This place is open for business, so let's get to the gettin'. Eluchil 12:53, 5 February 2006 (UTC)

Well, I'm updating the news pages at least weekly. What time frame were you looking for that, daily, or...?--み使い Mitsukai 04:54, 22 February 2006 (UTC)

Selected series vs. Featured article

I think there should be an anime/manga-related feature article instead of a featured series. I mean, there aren't that many series and most of them have small articles/stubs. Therefore, I can't imagine the featured series having a very broad scope; a featured article however... there are many great anime/manga-related articles in Wikipedia, and we can create more. Just out of curiosity, how often is the featured series supposed to be updated? -- Y Ynhockey || Talk Y 22:32, 2 March 2006 (UTC)

The original plan was once a week, but I haven't really had the time to work on this. Feel free to play around with it if you're interested! —Kirill Lokshin 00:02, 3 March 2006 (UTC)

Volunteers for Sections

I just updated the "Weekly" biography, which has been sorely left as is for quite some time. Considering that there seems to be only three people watching this portal, I suggest that until we get more participation, we pick a section to monitor. I can do news, since I'm already doing that, and I think Nihon's interested in the featured article/selected series/whatever it's gonna be. Should we alternate on the biographies, or does anyone else have an idea?--み使い Mitsukai 00:43, 3 March 2006 (UTC)

I think we should merge Selected Biography and Selected Series into Featured Article. Then we can suggest featured articles and vote on them for each week. Or, to save time, immediately vote for the next 4-5 weeks. -- Y Ynhockey || Talk Y 09:04, 3 March 2006 (UTC)
I have no problem with that. We can also take a cue from some of the other portals and have a "featured picture" to make up for the merged section.--み使い Mitsukai 23:55, 3 March 2006 (UTC)

Could someone who knows this series contribute to Joan of Arc in art#Comic books and anime? The article on the Japanese rock band Janne Da Arc says the band's name comes from a character in this manga. Please add a line to provide the year of release for the episodes where this character appears and any resemblance the character has to the historical Joan of Arc. Also (in general) the anime section is badly in need of release dates. Expert attention is welcome! Thanks, Durova 18:06, 16 March 2006 (UTC)

AnimeNfo.com article in danger.

I am having a dispute with some people who consider my article on animenfo.com as spam or advertising (and they are being quite condescendent about it). That website is reffered to in many anime articles, as a search for animenfo confirms. It is a useful database and review website for the anime scene, and much like imdb.com deserves an article on wikipedia. Similar websites for the equally "unencyclopedic" topic of videogames have large articles, such as gamespot.com, gamespy, etc. If you would like to help, please visit the animenfo.com article and post on the Discussion to help convince people about the usefulness of this article. Beltz 05:31, 10 April 2006 (UTC)

Just found the A&M portal page today, but quite glad that the AFD failed. I rather think that animenfo.com seems to be one of the more useful anime sites out there. (My main one's animeyume, but we won't go there...) ~Kylu (u|t) 02:29, 12 June 2006 (UTC)
While it is a very useful databae for anime information, it does not warrant its own Wiki article. It is best served as an External Link from various anime related articles. KyuuA4 16:45, 5 October 2006 (UTC)

Updates needed

FYI: The Selected series needs to be stocked up. This is week 22, and there are no selections made beyond this week. I also added a "to do" box to the top of this talk page, listing some other tasks. But, the "selected series" is most urgent. -Aude (talk | contribs) 14:37, 31 May 2006 (UTC)

I thought there was a consensus that for the selected series we would be using the WP:AMCOTW, so whatever was collaborated on for the previous week. Since this was the case, we would have to wait until Saturday before the Selected series gets updated. --Miss Ethereal 14:44, 31 May 2006 (UTC)
It appeared from looking at the archives, that some weeks' selections hadn't been made. I now see the discussion on Portal talk:Anime and manga/Selected series/2006. That arrangement is fine with me. -Aude (talk | contribs) 16:47, 31 May 2006 (UTC)
I went back in time with my time machine and filled in the selected series with series that WP:AMCOTW collaborated on. Though my quantum drive is sort of broken, so hopefully I'll remember (or someone else will remember) to keep it up to date. :P --Miss Ethereal 20:36, 31 May 2006 (UTC)

I archived the August news items and posted a couple items for December, so I went ahead and crossed that off the to-do list. But it looks like there needs to be a selected series and biography chosen for this week (49)? -- 9muses 12:56, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

Fair use images

I removed the images in the selected article, introduction, selected biography section, as they are violations of Wikipedia's fair use policy. Please remember that fair use images can only be used in the article main spaces (the main page though is an exception)--TBC (aka Tree Biting Conspiracy) 12:18, 10 June 2006 (UTC)

I'd always considered Portals to be "encyclopedia content", just not articles. If this concept is correct, then shouldn't WP:FAIR be amended to allow for fair-use pictures which are used to substantially add to the encyclopedic content in portals? While not technically "articles" they're reader-facing pages, I think. Comment encouraged. :) ~Kylu (u|t) 00:33, 29 June 2006 (UTC)
If you think that the policy should be ammended and that portals should be allowed the usage of fair use images, feel free to propose it on WP:FAIR. Until then, fair use images are not allowed on portals (thus I'm removing that image of Ed currently in the biography section).--TBCTaLk?!? 08:24, 8 September 2006 (UTC)

An amendment is now being discussed here: Wikipedia:Fair use/Amendment/Fair use images in portals --GunnarRene 14:39, 10 December 2006 (UTC)

About the break

As TheFarix noted on my talk page, I broke the portal. It broke because I didn't move the corresponding templates and the portal used relative links. I've moved the templates so everything should be fixed :). — JeremyTalk 05:10, 15 July 2006 (UTC)

Edit: Just having a better look at animenewsnetwork.com. They do have a 'top 10 anime on TV in Japan' list. All I need is for more than one person to want this list in wikipedia and I'll get started.

Anime Style

I was thinking of the possibility of creating a list of visual or styleistic motifs common to anime. I realize that anime is extremely diverse and nothing appears in every anime but some thematic and artistic styles are common.

What do you think? Symmetric Chaos 22:51, 16 December 2006 (UTC)

Seems like a good idea.--SUIT 00:02, 28 December 2006 (UTC)
I agree. Must we cite our sources? I see that much of the content may be considered common knowledge. Neopetslovette 01:53, 29 May 2007 (UTC)
Citing sources is always a must; don't assume anything is common knowledge.-- 01:56, 29 May 2007 (UTC)
Especially with a topic as foreign as Anime. Remember, Wikipedia doesn't allow Original Research. I think such a list would be nice, and shouldn't be too hard write up. Some book must have already researched this.

How do I edit the "Anime/manga Portal"?

It comes up with a blank text area. I went to edit this page. @_@

It is actually a number of separate pages all transcluded onto the one page. Try clicking the edit links on each section (in the green parts). --Squilibob 09:29, 7 June 2007 (UTC)

Quotes?

I was looking at the portal and I noticed the Quotes box over to the right. Is this really needed, or can it be removed? I ask this because there is a huge blank space on the left of the portal halfway down, and if the quotes box was removed (or at least shortened) it wouldn't look so bad.-- 02:07, 29 May 2007 (UTC)

I think removing the quotes would help as you said. Quotes are meant to be on wikiquote anyway. --Squilibob 09:30, 7 June 2007 (UTC)

Organization

Hello, I would like to make an organizational proposal for this portal. If you look at the current main page, you'll see that the selected series and biography sections are missing, so we definitely need to get a task force for that. To summarize, we need to...

  1. Re-organize the entire project
    1. Find a leader (I'll serve as a temporary one) to direct activities.
    2. Form a guideline to take care of the various tasks of the project (DYK, selected biographies, etc.)
      1. Guideline should outline the procedure to find the selected series/biography
      2. organize the process by which officials/leaders of the project are found
    3. (Possibly) reformat the portal page. (This is just my opinion, but) I think that the portal should reflect Anime and Manga by being colorful, yet organized to get across the point of anime/manga.
  2. Find members for the project
    1. Active contributors will be needed to update information quickly
    2. More people=more ideas, so this would definitely improve the project
    3. I propose a userbox to be created to spread the word of the portal, but ideas are welcome
  3. Actively improve the portal
    1. The portal needs to be updated to reflect current events
    2. Possible obtain featured portal status

This is just a rough outline, but if you have suggestions, please feel free to add them. Hopefully we'll be able to greatly improve this portal. If you have any questions, please let me know on my talk page, or post them here. Best of luck! *Cremepuff222* "As cool as grapes..." 20:15, 7 June 2007 (UTC)

Note, for Portal:Anime and manga/Selected biography/Week 23 2007 and Portal:Anime and manga/Selected series/Week 23 2007, I've added the first paragraphs of two already existing articles. *Cremepuff222* "As cool as grapes..." 20:49, 7 June 2007 (UTC)
I'd be happy to do some misc. design tasks, just drop me the specs and I'll get on it. « ANIMUM » 20:53, 7 June 2007 (UTC)
Stocked the selected series list for one month, and the selected biography list for the next three months. This should take care of this problem, at least for the moment. LainEverliving LainEverloving 07:19, 28 June 2007 (UTC)

What is this broken link for? Should it be removed or redirected or what?

Someone is supposed to add a small description of a different anime or manga series each week. However, no one has been doing so lately, explaining why we see the red links. // DecaimientoPoético 22:05, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

Oz anime images

Could anyone please help me out... I am asking about the current images in the The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1986 anime) article and an option of adding new ones as well... Me and another Wikipedia user whom have been contributing to the show article would like to create a page which would consist of descriptions of all the main characters as well as screen captures of them all - this has been done in many other characters pages on Wikipedia... We are not sure if this is allowed... Currently there are already four images of the main characters of the show and unfortunately TinmanAnime.jpg is nominated for deletion... has could anyone help us out? Article evaluation

Does this project really endorse rating articles with NO SOURCES as 'B' quality? (See: List of Universal Century nations and factions) GundamsRus (talk) 19:29, 5 December 2007 (UTC)

Note: This user is a disruptive sock puppet of an IP address. Jtrainor (talk) 21:06, 5 December 2007 (UTC)
Note about note: Even assuming that the accusation above is true, although I fail to see how an account can be a sock puppet of an IP address (and also ignoring the violations of WP:CIVIL and WP:AGF that the above comment breaches), I still fail to see how that has ANY relation to whether the project "endorses rating articles with NO SOURCES as 'B' quality" GundamsRus (talk) 21:33, 5 December 2007 (UTC)
Three things:
  • First, you're on the wrong page if you are trying to contact Wikiproject Anime and manga.
  • The project does not have a closed membership; therefore, if you are interested in correcting mistakes in or on anime- and manga-related articles, feel free to join.
  • If you disagree with a rating on an article, please discuss it on that article's talk page, not here.

Being Bold

So far, no one has responded to my attempt to start a discussion on this portal, so I've been bold and started updating/overhauling, as noted:

  • Updated our entry in the Portal directory to note that the project is still maintaining it
  • Updated the to-do list above and did some general clean up on this talk page
  • Renamed Selected article/biography to Featured, in keeping with how other portals do it
  • Completely overhauled featured article and biography system to use system closer to what other projects do, allowing for random biographies to display on load (making us look less old and stale), and hopefully making it easier to update/maintain the lists

Hopefully none of this was so hideous people find it just absolutely appalling, but of course constructive feedback would be good :) AnmaFinotera (talk) 04:29, 3 February 2008 (UTC)

Continuing my boldness since either no one is objecting or no one is caring (not sure which :P), I've changed the news section from a never updated news section to a general news updates for the project. AnmaFinotera (talk) 22:37, 14 February 2008 (UTC)

As long as we're being bold here, I might as well try to bring back an old suggestion I made a while back. How about we get rid of the quotes section? It's not really needed, is rather biased as to what characters from what series are quoted, is unsourced, and we already have Wikiquote for such things.-- 23:53, 14 February 2008 (UTC)
Agreed...I've just been trying to think of what to replace it with. Two ideas I've had are to highlight featured lists or to use it to note recent FA/GA's (similar to what is on the project page, but with more listings). Ideas?AnmaFinotera (talk) 00:00, 15 February 2008 (UTC)
You mean by transcluding Wikipedia:WikiProject Anime and manga/News here and listing the last 10 or so events? As for the FLs, since we do have quite of bit of them now, I'd say that sounds good too.-- 00:15, 15 February 2008 (UTC)
Yep...if I can figure out how to do so. :P AnmaFinotera (talk) 00:33, 15 February 2008 (UTC)
Okay, I went with rearranging, and then making a full blown featured list section similar to the articles and biographies. So far I've loaded in our 20 more recent FLs, and we still have many more that can go in. Kinda sad...we have so many great FLs, and so few FAs :(AnmaFinotera (talk) 05:54, 16 February 2008 (UTC)

Portal Images

A bot has run through and removed all of the non-free highlight images from the featured article, biography, and list blurbs in the portal. Even though its being used the same as it is on the front page for featured articles, it would appear this goes against the non-free image policy.

Considering the portal's area of focus, this left us with one whole image still usable, for the one FA biography we have. I started a discussion at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content#Non-Free Images in Portals to confirm this, and basically got the answer of yep, they have to go. So, to avoid our portal being deft of images for most of our features articles, I've taught myself a new template trick.

For the featured articles, where there is no non-free image, Image:Wikipe-tan in navy uniform.png shows up as a default. Any ideas for which images, either of Wikipe-tan or something else, that might be good for the featured biography and featured list sections? AnmaFinotera (talk) 04:30, 19 February 2008 (UTC)

I wonder if Image:Wikipe-tan holding sign.png could be modified to make the blank sheet look more featuredy and more listy for the featured list section? -Malkinann (talk) 02:49, 11 September 2008 (UTC)
If it could, that would be cool! I posted awhile back asking about it, but so far no one has volunteered to tackle it and I'm not that good of an artist :P -- AnmaFinotera (talk · contribs) 03:35, 11 September 2008 (UTC)

Requesting Article Feedback

I'm rather new to Wikipedia and as a starting article, I created an article for the anime Comedy. I tried to keep close to the style guidelines; however, since it is my first attempt, I'm bound to have room for improvement. Any constructive criticism is appreciated. --JadeFox (talk) 20:42, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

You'll probably get better results posting in the project talk at: Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Anime and manga rather than here, as the later gets more traffic. :) You seem to be on the right track with the article though. Make sure to follow the WP:MOS-AM. I did a few quick fixes on some minor issues. For your note on the talk page, you may be right on the need to merge. Perhaps in a single article on the Deep Imagination film collection? AnmaFinotera (talk) 23:58, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

Quality?

How highly-rated (in terms of quality) does an article need to be to be a selected article here? I'd like to nominate Katsuji Matsumoto at some point in the future for selected biography, either once it's ranked as B or GA. I think it'd be nice to have a real person as the selected biography, not just a fictional character, and the article is of higher quality than a lot of the project's real person articles. -Malkinann (talk) 01:42, 11 September 2008 (UTC)

For biographies and series, because we have so few right now, it must be a GA that has passed within the last year. Eventually, I'd like it to be FA, but we need way more of those first. :P For lists, it must be FL. And I agree on the need for more real people bios! I keep an eye on recent GAs posted at the project talk, but once you have it to GA, feel free to post here too to remind me to add it to the queue. -- AnmaFinotera (talk · contribs) 01:45, 11 September 2008 (UTC)
Cheers! I've updated the language in the To Do box to reflect that recent GAs are also acceptable. -Malkinann (talk) 01:59, 11 September 2008 (UTC)
Thanks. Originally I'd planned to load with some GAs and FAs to get it populated, then limit new entries to FAs, but ended up being no new entries LOL -- AnmaFinotera (talk · contribs) 02:04, 11 September 2008 (UTC)
How often do the selected biographies get changed? -Malkinann (talk) 02:23, 11 September 2008 (UTC)
All of the selected areas (bios, articles, lists) randomly pull from the list of available items. -- AnmaFinotera (talk · contribs) 02:38, 11 September 2008 (UTC)
Interesting. I don't quite get it (refreshing doesn't change the articles around), but it's interesting. -Malkinann (talk) 02:52, 11 September 2008 (UTC)

removing non-GA/FA/FL items

I noticed we seem to have stuff rotating that are no longer considered quality articles. The item that brought this up was Sailor Jupiter's biography. Missunderstanding of the word "manga"

The portal page implies that manga means comic or whimsical picture the later one is true but it does not mean comic when you translate the characters. The word manga is associated with comic and that term has been adopted in japan except they spell it as "komikku (コミック)".I will edit it right now.MartianH ―Œ(talk) 05:23, 7 March 2011 (UTC)

漫画 and コミック/コミックス are pretty much used interchangeably in Japan, and in an English-language context, the word "comics" is the closet approximation to what "manga" are to someone who is not familiar with the term.-- 06:19, 7 March 2011 (UTC)
